Thinking of a sporter style rebuild compatable with Rem 700 stock and need to decide between Stiller Preditor and Barnard SM actions ...What would you recommend...why? Thanks

If by sporter you mean hunter that will see some wet or rough environments I would prefer the more conventional look and finishes/materials of the Stiller.

Both are great actions, but my preference would be to lean toward the Barnard for target applications and the Stiller for a long range hunter. Both actions are suitable for either application so pick what you want. I would be most concerned with repeater options if so required.

Remington isn't all bad either. ;)

When shopping for a field action, just ask how well they will stand up to the elements.

Not rusting but functioning when wet, dirty and/or frozen.

In a hunting rig, you will rarely be able to extract all that a vault tight action can give you AND you will have to live with some of their design limitations.

For something that can see weather, a Savage will work better then a full meal deal custom.

If you need a Rem 700 footprint, then get a Rem 700 and leave it STOCK.

To compare both call Roberston composites they carry both and will have a better then average understanding of the strengths and weakness of each action.

We have built many rifles on both actions. For a hunting/target rifle the Stiller would be the better choice I believe. The Barnards are tighter toleranced which "may" cause issues in a less than clean environment.

Like most shooters, 99.9 percent of my shooting is at the Range...I will probably never hunt with this rifle build (I just like to shoot sporter style guns..accurately) I want to put the action in an HS Precision stock (from an LTR) and be able to use Rem 700 bottom metal. Can I do that with the Barnard? Stiller?
Maybe I should not worry about the stock and bottom metal, but I am trying to slow my slide into the realm of "target" rifles....so I still want to look like a hunter on the firing line.
Thanks

Both actions share the Rem 700 footprint so stock will work with either.
Bottom metal will also work with either, with very minor modification.

There a number of Barnards in F class locally and they are doing very well.

So I can say that if you went Barnard for a range queen, it will work as well as any.

Is that the right choice? Have a chat with those that use them and sell them. Compare their thoughts, availability and costs. See which offers the easiest for support cause parts do break every now and then.

Both exist in the marketplace with a solid history. Either will serve you well.

enjoy the quest

Jim....

I have a Stiller Tac 30 in 260AI, (you've shot it) and a .22-250AI on the Barnard (you've also shot it)

If you want to compare these two, I'm sure I could work it that you could run the 2 SxS and see what you think......

Could probably hook up at the SP range........

The barnard IMO is the slickest/smoothest action I have used, FAR superior in my mind. After the service by Stiller (NONE). I would never buy another Stiller item, and in fact Jerry and his actions can kiss my a$$....(Customer service is garbageland)

I'll PM my phone #......We can line something up.

Thanks for your input guys. Picked up a Barnard S today...Would have prefered the SM but it was there, and I am weak.

There was some

on my SM action, Rick at ATRS figured it out, you chamfer the chamber, then all is good, the single shots as far as I gather need the same but its no biggy.....
