stingers

I had an interesting experience with stingers just last week. A buddy had some and was trying them out of his el-cheapo Herbert Schmitt single action and was only hitting the 2x2 foot cardboard target backer about 3 out of 10 times - I blamed the gun. He gave me a handfull and I tried them out of my Ruger Single Six - same results only 3 hits in 2x2 foot square at 20 yds - 2 of which where sideways from tumbling. Then I tried them in my 10/22 - 10 shots in pretty much one slightly enlarged hole - what a difference.

I have a similar experience with stingers, wasn't too happy how they group out of one gun. Then I had big ammo shoot from my other gun and stingers were the only ones that shoot well from that one, not even gold medal federal or lapua super club came close. I have heard 30gr bullets are too short and stubby to be aerodynamically stable but it doesn't seem to be true.

As I understand it, Stingers have the same overall length as a standard .22LR round but use a lighter and shorter bullet and slightly longer case. This is possible because they are a heal type round meaning the bullet is the same diameter as the case with a slight reduction on the back to fit into the case. This was common with very early cartridges such as the .22LR. So Stingers will fit any standard chamber .22LR but it makes sense they would be tight in a match chamber. Especially if it was dirty at all, even a standard chamber would be tight with Stingers if dirty. They are not known for their accuracy but I am certainly not an authority on that.
It's amazing to think that our .22 cartridge dates from the 1850s or 1860s and is still in use everwhere dimensionally unchanged.

The new match chamber engraves rifling the full length of the normal .22LR bullet. On the Stinger, it engraves rifling onto the case, which I'm thinking probably isn't great especially considering it's a plated case.
