I am trying to find a cheap place to buy a stock blank.

I want to make my own custom stock for my 10/22, this will be my first attempt at making a stock so I don't want to spend a lot on something I could mess up.

I have plenty of woodworking experience and would like to expand my skills, your help in locating a supplier would be appreciated.

Thanks

Tim

Look at calicohardwoods.com.

Never dealt with them, but have been told that they will ship. Prices look good.

In Ontario? Check the yellow pages for sawmills, and ask if they do hardwood. Ask who does, if they don't. The guys that do sawing like that know the rest of the folks in their area, and what they deal in. You may be able to get some suitable wood there.

For a .22, look also at any Windsor Plywood store. Some Walnut in 2" plus sizes there.

Laminate blanks? Boyd's. Couple others. Have seen one fella at a couple gun shows, flogging his wares and services. Does only laminate stocks. Has blanks, etc. Never got his card. He was in the same area as Prophet River, at the Lloyd show, if that rattles someone's memory.

Or you can laminate one up from about anything. Birch Plywood makes a nice blank. Cut a bunch of profiles, glue them up, carve from there.

If you really want a nice looking stock, and don't want to risk a nice chunk of wood cutting and trying, you can make up a stock from whatever boards you can get, then send that, and your nice wood, to a duplicator.

Or play with Fiberglass, resin, carbon fiber, etc...

Or head for the machine shop...

Limitless options.

There is a company that sell specialty wood in Halifax Nova Scotia that sell walnut gunstock blanks , I don't remember the name but I am sure someone from the area will chime in.

You could also find a local specialty wood place near you and pick something there maple, mahogany, beech are also nice wood and maybe more readily available.
If you decide to pick your own wood make sure it is quarter sawn .

East Coast Specialty Hardwoods in Burnside Park Dartmouth.

Here's my best two bits worth outta the whole of the thinking in this, as I see it.

Carve a stock out of anything you can get. Pine boards, plywood scraps, whatever. Try different shapes and sizes, try different carving methods, etc., on a piece of wood that you won't cry over if you hate the way it turned out.

Heck. Old fridge and stove boxes are thick, and can be cut and stuck together as a quick way to work out shapes and sizes, to see if ideas work.

Trevj has a good idea here for sure, I have already made some laminated blanks out of boards cut into 2 1/2" x1/2" strips built up glued and clamped it would be a cheap way to practice for sure.
