Good afternoon folks. I have poured over alot of very old threads on stock duplication here in Canada. I have used a gentleman here in Saskatchewan for years now now with great success however he does not like to work with laminate. I have a specific project that I need to use laminate on and I am looking for a reputable place to have this done. I would greatly appreciate any help and first hand accounts of who you prefer. Thanks in advance.

Hi Kurt,

Is it the birch laminates he doesn't like or just laminates in general? I rarely use monolithic walnut stock blanks anymore as I glue up my own walnut. I have run birch laminates on my stock duplicators and they can dull the cutters a little, but that is part of being a stock maker. You have to know how to sharpen the cutters.

Can you tell me why a birch laminate is required when a walnut laminate won't work?

Thanks.

Jim

Yes Jim he doesnt like laminates and it is the birch I am planning on. I have a project requiring some color so that is what I need here. I am a straight up walnut guy so laminate isnt my wheelhouse. The other comment I heard is the smell is bad when cutting. So I cant force someone to do this job. I just need to find someone who will. Do you know anyone who can do this for me? At one point a few years ago I had two that I needed to do and I sent them to a guy in plenty, sk if I recall. I was told he isnt doing them anymore and quite frankly thats a good thing as my experience wasnt great.

Hi Kurt,

Unfortunately I do not know of anyone to use. I don't take any custom work anymore and living in a relatively remote area of Wisconsin I haven't made any contacts that have duplicators. Those that were doing just duplication were pretty much priced out of business when CNC duplicators were developed. I wish you the best of luck finding someone.

Please send me a message and we can discuss. I am not in a panic so we have time to set something up. Thank you for the response.

Once I can offer someone the service and do so with a straight face I’ll make a post here on CGN somewhere.

I don’t intend to take away business from any stock makers, but for a very long time it’s been true that they turn away work on a regular basis because they’re either too busy or it’s not something they’re interested in.

I'd be interested in getting a couple good fitting stocks I have duplicated. Keep us posted. - dan

This is true on both points - we are so backed up we have to turn work away!! Also you are not taking work away from anyone who turns it down so don't worry ;)

Have you looked into https://sienci.com/ for CNC? I got on their initial kickstarter years back as a hobby toy and proof of concept that you can make a gunstock on a cnc setup .... back then it was only a 4x4 foot machine with 3 axis - now they have added all kinds of fun stuff, including the 4th axis, lasers and an automated tool changer (game changer!!!) as well as the ability to use spindles rather than silly little trim routers.

The only thing to watch out for is the travel on the Z axis - for some designs you will need to setup your work area in such a way that the stock can sit below the extreme travel of the z-axis - i.e. a frame, not a work table.
