Does anyone in Canada have a stock duplicating machine? What is the charge for this type of service (not including blank)?

Don Robinson in Kelowna does very nice work. I bought two of his semis at the Kamloops Gun Show and I would say that they are 95-98% shaped/inletted not counting the barrel channel. I don't have his phone # but you can probably get it through Weber & Markin Custom Gunsmiths at 250-762-7575 in Kelowna.

There's also a guy in Saskatchwan who duplicated a laminate blank for me a few years ago but I misplaced all my contact info(big help hey)

Robert Wilson of RIW

Sporting and Survival Supply of Harris ,Saskatchewan has a duplicator. Phone number is 306-656-2159 or e-mail @ ri.wilson@sasktel.net.

I believe his stocks were in the 450.00 range. I personally felt that was a bit high as they were fairly rough and require a lot of sanding on your part.

That's the guy I was thinking of.

I forgot to mention that I paid Don around $150.00/stock. Nice dense Black Walnut with a bit of figure in the butt and decent flow through the grip.

He had a Turkish blank at the show for $625 and another for $525. Nice.

Robert Wilson i think charges around $150 if you are supplying the blank. If you are after plain wood then i know that you can pick up semi-inletted blanks for around $185 depending on what you want done. Laminate is a surcharge cause the glue is hard on tooling etc. The fine figured wood etc you pay more money for. The last blank that i got from him was very nice and did not take that long to finish.

Thanks for the info guys. I was thinking of supplying my own blank, but I'll give these folks a shout and see what they can offer.

Go to .terrco.com, for photos. I've used a Northstar carving machine, carving muzzleloader fullstocks. This was a larger industrial machine. Had an aluminum pattern made using an original gun, for the stylus to follow. You've got to be pretty serious to even consider getting one of these machines.

D henry's website has a picture of the duplicator he made. The best duplicator I have seen was made by Hoenig, I think he doesn't make them anymore .

Don Allen used to make duplicators in a couple of different models, this was before Dakota Arms came into exsitence. I am not sure if these are still made either.

duplicator

The machine pictured on my web site is a copy of a Don Allen machine with a few modifications. I cannot take credit for its construction. The late Ron Propp built it in Lethbridge in the early 80's. I was working for him at the time so we both spent a fair bit of energy constructing it, a very satisfying project non the less. If memory serves me corectly a quote from Don Allen for his single spindle carver was $12,000 US dollars in 1980 ish hence the decision to make our own. David Henry.

Duplication

Buckbrush I was affraid someone would ask that question. It takes me approximatly 5 to 7 uninterupted hours to setup my machine and fully duplicate your existing pattern. This does not include repairing a broken stock as a pattern or making allowances for cast off or cast on, the addition of palm swells, cheek pieces or dimensional changes required by the customer. The finish product is as close to a drop in fit as you will get anywhere, allthough many customers want material left here and there so they can finish to there own standards. That being said my shop rate is $50 per man/machine hour so you can do the math and find that a Boyds/Elk Ridge/Richards/Fajen or whomever beats my prices hands down. I do not use my duplicator for production work but more for custom projects where speed and economy are not to be factored in.
I get lots of people wanting various stocks duplicated but have to turn many of them away which is a bit of a dissapointment as I enjoy the work but there is just too much of it, and not enough time in the day to complete it in a timely fasion. David Henry.

So $250 - $350 range, or more if its going to have a few extra parts.

Sounds fair for a custom rig, but I'm not going to be bugging you to make a new stock for one of my enfields at that rate. :)
