Stock Duplication

I have never had a stock duplicated. But have a couple that I would like done - specifically a gun show find stock for a Remington Model 30 - original stock has multiple cracks and splits - came with the correct Rem marked 1926 barrel and various fittings, so was able to cobble something together using an action from a BSA M1917 conversion. So High End, is not necessarily something I am looking for. Solid, sound and stable probably are things I would look for. Having corresponded with others who have had mil-surp duplicates made, a lot seems to depend on quality of the "original" pattern on hand at the shop - if forearm is "bent" and barrel channel not straight, so will be the duplicate. I am retired, so not likely the type to pay for a fully finished and fitted stock - I more need the "bones" - 95% inletting, about similar exterior shaping done - I would prefer to do the final stuff myself.

Every high end custom gunmaker that works in wood in Canada will own or know someone who owns a pantograph. There is a fellow in Sask. that bought Don Robinsons equipment, I don’t know his name.

You would be better off learning how to make composite stocks, this seems to be a growing market.

I do , and have posted it a couple of times, but seems like that is getting to be a bad thing these days.

I think , to start, I would do hardwood/ Beech military type stocks for bolt action rifles, 98k mauser, 22 rifles etc
That way, you get in the game with plain stocks

I agree with this. Doesnt mater if your old and retired, any venture that requires an investment in equipment requires a monetary gain to sustain itself and I would think that the simple, easily attainable wood blanks for the military restorers could be your "bread & butter" income with the "custom fancy wood" stuff being the icing...no a lot of it being requested but a little better return when it does.

If just cutting the fancy grade stuff is what turns your noodle then I think you and your machines will have a lot of down-time .

I have a Terrco K star carver makes two copies at once .I mostly use it for my personal stuff .
It does take a nack to run it and the more time you spend cutting the better the quality final product.Takes about 1 1/2 hrs to rough out a set of blanks .I might be willing to sell it .
