If someone wants to switch from a plain collapsable stock to say a Magpul CTR stock can you just buy the stock and put it on the stock buffer tube or does it require something else?

Yes you can, but check what type of receiver extension (buffer tube) you have. It's either mil-spec or commercial.

Ok see I figured there was a difference but that is such a minor annoying difference

Great and now I have to go out and buy new calipers

Well it certainly SHOULD be but I should find out first before ordering a stock just in case

You don't need calipers to tell the difference. Look at the tube diameter. If it's flush with the threads you're commercial. If it's smaller, like down to the valleys of the threads, you're milspec.
