Lurked around long enough and got great info about my somewhat new m14. But now its time to ask for some help.

I ordered one of those boyds factory 2nd stocks 2weeks ago (chipped screw hole for the butt plate, no big deal). it has bedding cuts already done some light staining but otherwise, unfinished.

first thing i noticed when i tested it out was the receiver had alot of side to side play, but could that be more room for bedding?

another was when i installed the trigger assembly and did the safety test. Hammer locks back fine but when i keep the trigger held back and rack/release the action, the hammer follows the bolt.

I looked at the fitment of the stock and noticed the right side of the reciever isn't sitting flush with the stock. and the groove on the left side where the handguard clip fits into, is so low on the stock that it pops off when trying to get the receiver in.

any thoughts would be appreciated.

you can see a clear gap between the right side of the receiver and the stock

8. although there are some fitment issues, i'm still really happy with the stock, the wood looks amazing even though i still need to give it alittle more stain (possibly) and hit it with tung oil

Nice stock.

It looks like you need to relieve the stock under the rear of the oprod ledge so the receiver sits flat on the stock and then repeat the hammer tests.

If that doesn't fix it, you'll need to slightly relieve the stock under the rear of the trigger group pad where the finger-guard hooks into place to get the disconnector to engage more positively.

Don't worry about the side-to-side. When you apply your bedding compound it will snug up.

i'll break out the planer tonight and give that a shot.

i can't complain about the stock, it was 50bucks shipped to my door. so a little fitment hiccups are fine

use a file...... not a planer

place your action in the stock and use a pencil to trace your receiver, at the back end of the receiver's oprod bearing flange. there will be a small area, at the rear, under that flange that will need to be filed down to all that side of the receiver to sit flush.
your stock is definately a full bedding required affair and though is doable for those who have experience bedding the rifles..... it can and will be a challenge for those who are making thier first attempt.

you will find that after you relieve the oprod flange area on the stock, the trigger/safety tests should pass. If not, look to claven's advice on relieving the trigger pads. I would bed the action first though.
