Stock for 8" 10/22?

Most after market stocks are going to be too long for the 8" barrel... You will end up with muzzle blast scorching the stock. The 8" barrels that I have done have been extended slightly with a brake or I have modified the stock forend... The easiest to modify and have them look decent are wood... You can chop down and contour a factory stock or buy a Boyds and chop/contour that... I don't know if you have done woodworking or not, but this is a lot easier than it sounds with only basic tools... It will look great and be uniquely yours... PS the EVO forearm is too long for an 8" unless you modify it. IIRC the EVO is 27 1/4" long... So there is not a lot of room to play and keep it unrestricted. There is also a safety concern having the muzzle behind or close to the end of the foregrip with a short barrel... Its too easy to inadvertently get a finger in front of the muzzle when shooting... Especially when doing rapid fire plinking on uneven ground.
Many people just cut the forend down to get it behind the muzzle with the 8.5" barrels. This is easy work, especially with a wood stock. A bit of cutting, sanding and refinishing and you have your very own custom short barrelled 10/22 stock.

Hmmm...I was considering cutting down a factory stock. As noted above, it would be unique and pretty cool looking.
Does anybody know if the factory stock with an 8" barrel will still be above the OAL requirement?
On a side note, is there a noticeable difference between the 8" and 12.5", performance-wise?

I think it just makes it, but am not at home to measure my 12" barrelled 10/22 to confirm.
You will lose from 0-75fps, depending on the particular brand/type of ammo you are shooting. Accuracy is pretty much independent of barrel length for rimfire, unless you are shooting long range, so that is a wash.

Any stock over 26" renders the gun non-restricted regardless of the barrel length (+4 1/8")... so the factory stock is fine with an 8" barrel... BUT if you are going to cut the stock down make sure that you maintain a 26" minimum OAL. As far as the 8" vs 12.5" we haven't noticed any accuracy differences out to 50 meters... the muzzle of the 12.5" will extend beyond the forend of most stocks and the muzzle of the 8" will will not reach the end... see the pics below... the pinky has an 8" + muzzle brake, the Black Barracuda has a 10.5" + 2" brake;

I'd go with a boyds evo for that short barrel.

Once it arrives I'll figure out what needs to be done as far as the stock is concerned.
This will be fun!
It is a nice barrel, but you will have to modify a stock.
Even the EVO will have to be modified unless an upwardly ported brake is used... any 360 degree ported brake will scorch the forend tip.

I went with the Choate pistol grip stock. I wanted a shorter lop so I removed the pad and used a 9" barrel to give me 26.25" overall.
I had planned to use an 8" but needed the 9" for the lop I wanted.

Have you considered rounding off the forend... it might look more intentional. I have done many... if you have a chop saw you can set it at 45 derees and work your way aroung the end of the stock, angle trimming and then use a rasp to to even and shape it.... finally sand it to the texture that you prefer... Final coats with Krylon Textured black, then Flat Black and then UV Clear... it is a good looking finish.
Hey Hoyt thanks for the suggestions!I thought about cutting the forearm at a 45 but I don't want branches getting stuck in there when I'm chasing partridge trough the bush.I'll probably do some more shaping once the Magpul AFG is installed then I'll have a better idea what it looks like.I already have a can of Tremclad textured black paint that I picked up at Crappy Tire the last time I was in Timmins.The local HH doesn't have much selection.
When you are done your final coat, let it harden for three days and then do three coats of the Clear Matte UV top coat... it really hardens up and locks in the finish... lets you wipe it done more thoroughly. Should look cool when you are done.
