I recently got in a trade a Browning A-Bolt medallion in 270wsm, the wood stock is in rough shape, none of the markings appear to be through the finish... I would like to get her looking pretty again, just not sure if this is a task I can do myself... Any recommendations? Can I just sand it down and re-finish?

Or can a gun nutter out there recommend a shop that does this? I live in Winnipeg, but, I would send the stock away for a professional job...

Any advise/help is greatly appreciated.

There are quite a few options for rejeuvenating a wood stock these days. On the easier side of things, you could just find a replacement on the internet, but what's the fun in that? To refinish your existing stock, you can get a furniture stripper and strip the old ratty finish off, then see what can be done about any gouges and scratches. It's best to sand as little as possible to avoid altering the dimensions of the stock, so any dents can be raised by placing a damp cloth over them and steaming them out with a hot iron. Gouges or scratches will have to be sanded down, though, so work slowly and carefully, especially around any parts where the stock meets the metal. Once the surface looks nice again, then finish with the product of your choice. For tips on the stripping, sanding and finishing, google and youtube are your best friends if you don't have any experience with those things. I've refinished a ton of old stocks and built a few from scratch, and it doesn't take a lot of skill; just a bit of patience and an eye for what looks good. Have fun with your project. It can be addicting, though......

Thanks for the help guys. It is quiet a nice piece of wood (that just sounds bad) so I would like to keep it... I will hopefully post pictures once it's done. Thanks again!
