dear sirs,i have a H S stock on my 700p,which i glass bedded and have shooting well, but my cheek weld is about a 1/2 inch too low.other than buying another stock with an adjustable cheek peice,is there some mechanical modification i can install/have installed.

It doesn't look great but it is easy to do.

Buy some "canopy tape" in the thicker form. It comes in a roll and is 2 inches wide. It is used between the top of the truck box and a canopy that would be place there. Peel off the paper and it has a sticky side. Cut to shape and place a couple of strips on the stock. You may have to do two layers. Then obtain a thin piece of soft smooth leather, cut it to fit what you have already put on your stock and using contact cement attach it to the surface of the canopy tape on your stock.

Your stock can be converted to have an adjustable comb. Shotguns stocks are done all the time for trap shooting. I usually charge $225. It is not a nice as a stock that is manufactured with the adjustments built in.

If it is fiberglass they are relatively easy to build up, I do this regularly, to get fiberglass stocks to fit the shooters properly, it is more like auto body work than gunsmithing, but to establish a good weld spot is critically important to precise shooting.

i have wrapped duct tape and medium but it is not satisfactory.i have a rooster on my M1a but i dont think it will hold up to 300 ultra recoil.i was hoping the screw type mechanism could be implanted in this stock.i glass bedded the aluminium block and then had to custom inlet the forestock to fit the rifle because the factory messed up.it is a nice stock so was hoping to salvage it.guntech, not as nice you say.in asthetics or function?

Your stock can be converted to have an adjustable comb. It is not a nice as a stock that is manufactured with the adjustments built in.

The conversion does not have external adjustment knobs. You use an allan wrench to loosen two screw to remove the "comb" and then there are adjustments for cast on or off and a quick stop for the height. Usually these are adjusted to suit the shooter and only removed for cleaning rod access through the action and then simply placed back on. They are not good for quick adjustments while shooting.

Contact Ziggy (Old Northland Sports). He will be able to give you the name and phone number of a person in your town that can do the modifications you want. I have seen his work and it is perfection. As for the quick adjustment knobs let me know and I can make them for you.

I may be wrong but this is what I think about adjustable cheek pieces. Keep it simple. You are shooting long distance and found you are lifting your head to get proper scope alienment. You have been shooting the rifle for a while and have found the sweet spot when holding it. By installing the adjustable cheek piece on your stock, you will also holding the rifle differant. You may also need an adjustable butt plate to get the rifle to fit you properly again. I would install both at the same time.

You could always install or have installed one of Robertson Composites adjuster mechanisms. Either the thumbwheel or clamp type. Of course the free way is tape.
