Stock Norinco M14?

I know everyone is constantly fiddling with their Norinco M14s and upgrading, but does anyone ever use one stock with no upgrades? I'm thinking about getting one and i'm wondering if modifications are necessary right off the bat? I want to use it with Iron sights, so would it be ok to just shoot it stock?
Just wondering, i love the M14s...
 
Ya totaly fine to shoot it stock, the mods done to these rifles are 1st To tighten up the groups by replacing the stock Norinco parts with tried and true parts such as NM, SA just to name a couple. And 2nd to change the apperience of the rifle to their like
 
i ran mine stock for a few months. Easy enough to shoot, baged my first buck with it. I replaced the stock cuz the plastic one felt cheepy. Got a SEI brake for it cuz I dint like the look of the flash hider and wanted somthing more functional. The new batch of rifles seam to need veary little tweeking, if any, to be a decent shooter. buy lots of ammo and get used to her first.
 
ok cool, because I want to get one but don't want to drop $$$ into it right off.
What about ammo? I've read it only takes the 7.62 NATO, does this mean not to shoot the .308win?

Does anyone know the quality of the wood stock on the Norinco? I prefer the wood look over everything else.
 
There is nothing wrong with these rifles straight out of the box. There is nothing wrong with the wood stocks right out of the box. If you think you want to shoot 1 inch groups at 400 yards get a different rifle. You can shoot 308 just fine. All the Rambo wannabes who mess with these rifles forever are just that. Wannabes.
 
on the other hand , the chu wood one i have feels like it was carved directly from the tree with nothing more than a chisel- it made the world of difference when i replaced it with a usgi fiberglas - it's almost a drop-in

Exactly. Granted the chu wood stocks work, but I prefer a wooden stock that
a) didn't come out of the box mouldy
b) isn't so soft that mild pressure from my thumbnail can leave marks on it and
c) doesn't leave my hands stinking of cosmoline, even after it has been cleaned several times.

Hear that Hungry? .... you're just a Rambo wannabe who tweeked his M305 and beat rifles 6x their purchase price in competition. Why oh why couldn't you and the other wannabes like M14Doc, Skullboy etc just leave those Chinese M14's alone? Think of the children!!!!!!

Chu Wood Solution

Here you go:

3 trips thru the pots and pan cycle of your buddies dishwasher. A light sanding, and 2-3 coates of truck bedliner! Voila, a textured, synthetic appearance without expending $100+ for a new stock.

Not sure that they even come with the chew wood anymore. I think they're all synthetic. The synthetic stock isn't bad at all. The gun itself is a lot of fun. I have 2 currently. One is all done up with the JAE stock Krieger barrel and Optics. The other one is brand new, and I just put a walnut stock on it, simply because I like the look. Other than that I plan to leave it plain with iron sights (at least as long as I can still use them, the eyes aren't what they used to be)

Where do you order walnut stocks from?
For those who have experience, how are the iron sights that come with it? That would be one thing I would change right away if they are no good, i plan to keep it iron sighted.

Nothing wrong with them right out of the box. get one shoot it for a bit and later if you want to upgrade it a bit go ahead. Or just leave it the way it is. A friend of mine has one that he has put a pile of ammo through bone stock. I would say if you plan to leave it alone get the synthetic stock seems nicer than the original wood.

The rear sights are one of the weak points on the rifle...some are ok but alot have the windage screw stripped.....I swapped mine for a set off a M1 Garand as they are identical.....I found a guy in Italy that has Garand rear sights for sale...$70 shipping incl.

hey ya hey! I picked up one of these fun rifles (2007 M14s) for not too much money, as I was looking to get back into the 7.62 iron-sights-at-a-distance thing, and I've been totally pleased with the beastie!

There are a couple of things I'd like to fix; barrel is misindexed (sights adjusted to compensate), gruesomely thick front sight blade (I think I'm going to dremel or file it thinner), but that's it! The stock's not even all that bad, looks and feels fine to me, no interference with the reciprocating components...

I'm certain that many of the mods out there that doesn't turn it into a 'space gun' actually help (different spring guide, better sights, never mind indexing the barrel.. ;)..) but I'm pleased to be shooting the thing well enough to make the 18"x18" gong at 300yds ring often enough to be pleased with my $400 purchase. Yup, $400. Cheap enough to carefully apply a file to the sights with no regrets, if you ask me.

Thank G I'm handy! w:h: Mind you, next time I see Larry at one of the local shows, I'd be more than pleased to let him have a look at it to confirm a few other wonderings about the gun I have. (Headspace etc. The cases are looking fine by me, mind!) And no problems otherwise with how it works.

Back in the day I was lucky enough to have owned a TRW M14. This one will do just fine; I wish you luck with yours!!
 
Mine will shoot under a 2" group bone stock scoped with a marstar mount I love it ,with hand loads I got it down to 1.5" picked it up used barely for $425.00 with scope mount and cheek riser. I have alot of expensive guns but this keep coming out with me it just is way to much fun I have been dragging it around shooting coyotes next year its my deer gun

Wow, seems like there is a lot more positive feedback than I thought!
So are there any mods that you would deem necessary? If it comes to doubling the life of the rifle or easily increasing accuracy I would do it in a heartbeat.
