How much ammunition do you keep on hand for each of your handgun calibres? I don't want to be considered excessive, nor do I want to be short.....

9mm I keep a min of 200 at all times which I won't dip in to. But usually 300-700 rounds on hand . 22Lr I have usually 500 to 1500.

My minimum on hand is 7000 rounds .22lr, 7000 handgun rounds of various calibers, and 7000 rounds of rifle/shotgun rounds of various caliber. This fills a 4' x 2' x 2' metal tool box full of 22 "Fat 50" ammo cans plus several cases of 7.62 x 39 mm. When the ammo shortage hit the United States two years back, but not here yet, I bought all that I could afford because I knew we would soon be in the same jam in Canada. I only shoot what I can reload now, so I have to be smart about it. Regardless, stocking ammo has turned out to be a great investment and reloading is yet a better investment if I can find what I need.

Now here is my word to the wise. Have a 1 year food storage as well as medicine and other essentials on hand before ever stockpiling ammo. You won't live to shoot the stuff if you have no food! I do not believe the SHTF soon but it doesn't hurt to invest in goods like this to hedge you future expenses if you can. If I can live at today's dollar purchasing power well into the future, why not? It doesn't hurt to be prepared with these unprecedented market swings of present day.

5000 units of 22LR,
1000 units of 22 Short,
4000 units of 9mm, 3500 are reloads,
4000 units of 45ACP, 3500 are reloads,
500 units of 357/38, just started to reload these.
Keep 500 of each rifle, mostly reloads.
When I reload pistol, try to do 1000 at a time. Buy in bulk, better prices. The only way you get better at something is practice.
However I do agree, if you don't have other supplies, ammo alone won't keep you alive. We have 2 solar grid panel units, 1 wind turbine. We also have a diesel generator with a 2-1000 gal tanks (1 of diesel & 1 of recycled vegetable oil). We have family members who remember WWII, Winter War & Other conflicts.

This is just an estimate, most are my reloads.

16,000 22LR
6000 9mm
2200 45 acp
1650 44 mag
500 454 Casull
800 460 S&W
1100 10mm
1250 357 mag

The answer is different for everyone as to how much is too much or too little. I probably have around 5000 45 acp stashed away, which may not be even a months supply for some people, but if for any reason it was mentioned on the news, I would be crucified for stockpiling ammo. I try to keep a year or more worth of ammo in each caliber, if not loaded rounds, then components for that much. For some people that might mean 100 rounds, others might need 100,000 in a year.

All my firearms take one of 4 calibers .22 LR normally around 2 to 5 thousand, of a few different kinds. .308 no less then 200 FMJ target as-well no less then 100 ST hunting rounds .303 British normally no more then 200, normally about 80 to 100, my rifle loves 180 Winchester Hyper X... yah the only stuff it likes is the most expensive stuff commonly found. Then there is my .45 Long Colt I keep around 500 rounds total of about 3 or 4 different loads and makers...

I only allow one ammo box per caliber at this time. but I do use my .22 LR rifles and my .45 LC the most.

I generally have one or two cases in reserve for each caliber, plus the current open case. I might buy more if I saw a great deal, but after a while other buying takes priority. Right now I'm stocking up on reloading components for .40S&W and 45ACP.
