I'm painting a M-700 stock (tupperware). I used a medium flat grey, then I'm shadow painting it with a flat tan colour, plus flat black, using twigs from a shrub as a stencil.

The question is: what's the best paint to use as a clear coat to seal it all in?
Should it be oil based or lacquer? And is there any such a thing as a flat clear coat?

Btw, I don't have pics of yet; I'll post some up when I get time.

I used Krylon brand Camo paint and Krylon satain clear .... I could only find a satain clear (No matte clear )
I used some steel wool and buffed it lightly after applying 3 coats of clear to it after painting mine . This took the shine off it and it has held up really well so far.

I've got a few pics of the stock prior to painting. The previous owner had already done a paint job on it, but I didn't like it.

I replaced the factory J-Lock bolt assembly with a replacement bolt shroud, firing pin assembly, which I bought from Brownells (they didn't have a SS assembly).

I was looking for opinions on this before I throw the clear coat at it.

I don't know if I went about this the 'right way' or not; first attempt at painting a rifle stock. I taped off the sling studs, recoil pad, plus I sanded the edge of the pad to improve the fit.

I put the first coat of clear coat on. I'm going to wait 24 hours then apply the second coat; intending on 3 coats.

Question: Should I give it a light going over with the steel wool before adding the second and third applications of clear coat? Or just go over it with the steel wool after the final coat?

I'm no pro, but I think most will say give it light scuff between coats.

I tried to sell this rifle a couple times; no takers, so I said "what the heck, guess I'll keep it..." well I finally got around to buying bases, rings and a scope (Leupy VX3 2.5-8X).

I suppose it looks ### or okay... gonna sight it in next week, when I hit days off again.
