Iam staining a gun stock (old cooey) Im using a red mahogany stain. The problem is that its so dark I cant see the grain! The can tells me not to sand between coats ....what do I do????I want to see the grain.

It sounds like you are using a finish that has stain in it.

Sand it off or remove it chemically or both and don't use it. Use a thin stain that doesn't seal the wood and build up like paint. Then finish using Flecto Varathane number 66 oil finish or use tung oil or some other modern
"oil" finish.

What guntech said. If you look on the can, stain is usually sold as solid stain, semi transparant stain or transparant stain. You do not want solid stain (or even some semi transparant stains) if you want to see the grain. ;)
