Would you guys go with extra dark oil or go with neutral oil? This is the stock with water on it to show what it would look like if I used a neutral oil. This stock is already pretty dark. My original intentions was extra dark but now I'm thinking maybe just dark or neutral.

This is a shotgun I did with extra dark but this was a stock that appeared bright orange/yellow when it was wet.

Yea I figured the answer would be neutral. I didn't realize this stock had such nice grain because it was a high gloss finish before so I bought extra dark Scherell Schaftol. Now that the gloss is stripped and the stock is prepped for oil, I do the water test just to see what it would look like with a neutral oil and to see if I left some of the old finish behind and then it revealed this beautiful grain. Now its caused me to have second thoughts on extra dark.

For that stock no stain. Use a natural oil or finish of your choice which is not going to be clear anyways and will darken the wood somewhat with it's own colour.

I never use stain. I just use oil. Just some oil's you can choose will either darken, pronounce, or lighten the natural colour of your wood as more and more coats of oil are rubbed in.

So I tried the extra dark oil on the inside of the stock to see what it would look like. It looks very good so I went with it on the outside of the stock. See the oil doesn't stain the wood. The oil is just dark so it gives the wood a darker appearance but leaves the woods natural colour. Well that's the first coat of many. Will probably take up to 7 to 12 coats in the next 2 - 3 weeks and it will be finished. Checkering is done on the last two applications of oil.
