Not too sure on the boyd stocks for finish, but this is what I do for myself and others. I start with 320 by hand, or orbital sander, followed by 400 dry by hand until 320 scratches are gone, then depending on wood I'll go to 600 then 800. If the 400 feels good, I'll go right to 800. Blow off really well and while doing this step and further I wear rubber gloves as to not get oil on the stock. I like Tru-Oil for a nice finish. Just rub it on well, let it sit for about a day, use 000 steel wool lightly on the stock, tack off and repeat. I usually do 6-8 coats for a semi gloss finish. When done, I just use a little oil on a rag when finished to give it a little more. Hope this helps.
