Unfortunately, a new higher end SxS shotgun of mine suffered some stock damage on a hunt this week. It now has a few press marks in the finish, that I would like to have repaired. Who would you recommend to do a top quality repair and refinish?

How deep are the press marks and what kind of finish is on the stock? As long as its just a press mark and not a gouge where wood is missing, it can likely be steamed out. That is also assuming its oil finished and not sealed with some sort of hard finish

----Chris Dawe--cj.dawe @hotmail.com---709-699-1792---I have been in his shop, viewed and handled his work--it is exquisite.--BTW Stubblejumper, his very good friend,Ken Dinn breeds excellent Drahtaars which have been sold all over the world.--I have followed your posts on yours--"things" seem to be going well with your pup !---CHEERS !---Bent Barrel

I also would not hesitate recommending Chris Dawe. He has refinished several stocks for me on vintage/antique shotguns including 2 that needed very major repair work. His prices are also quite reasonable.

Ya I have used a clothes iron to steam light press marks out. Soak the spot well and hit it with the iron.

Will that not remove the oil finish? The marks are not gouges, no material removed, just press marks.

Things are going great with the pup. I have now taken both sharptailed grouse and pheasant over him, and today we teamed up with another dog and handler to win the club hunt. Each dog found five birds in 40 minutes, but one bird did not offer a safe shot as my pup broke and ran under it. We ended up with a total of nine birds. Tomorrow, it's back to pheasant hunting.

The nice thing about oiled stocks is that they can be re-oiled and you'll likely never see the steamed out dents. I have done this myself and usually the part that you steam out lightens because the oil seaps out. Reapplying BLO will bring the wood back to its original colour. But as mentioned earlier, it really depends on how deep these press marks are. If they are a couple mm deep, they'll come out easy

Me.

i do high end stockwork and repairs. PM "Bullseye" and ask him about the 5* stock he sent me with a chunk missing.

(as far as steaming out the dents....risky. Firstly in can cloud an oil finish (and is disaster for French polish!), and secondly it has to be steamed, then *dried* (I have a dehumidification kiln for this) and *then* sanded. Skipping the drying part can cause your 'innie' to become an 'outie' as the MC % equalizes.
