All of mine are wood, and up till recently it was just because thats what came along. Then I shot my buddies Charles Daly 12ga semi in camo synthetic. I didn't like the feel of the stock at all. I don't know if all synthetics are like that, but I don't think I'll be buying any soon to find out. I don't worry about scratches and dings in the wood, they just add character.

stocks

I buy both, being left handed it's a tougher selection process. I also like to say in 35 years of hunting i have never had a problem with a wood stock swelling or warping ( keep a good finish on them and you should not have a problem). I like the looks of wood, it's warmer feel to hold, And if you take care of your rifles properly, they will look as good as mine do year after year.

There are many synthetics now that feel warmer than wood, dura touch and the like... very good grip too... I like my synthetics.

Hey dosing this poll sucks... what about laminate stocks. :p

Not just wood, but walnut. The following is a translation from "Espengarda Perfeyta", written in Portugal in 1717:

" There are various woods of which Stockmakers make Stocks, but all must choose Walnut, for it is the best, and possesses those qualities which make it more proper for being worked, and also for its security, this being what makes it more durable. It is light to handle, attractive by nature, and lastly it keeps straight, a singular quality for our purpose...

Thus, only Walnut should be chosen, and from the heart of the timber, where are to be found the good qualities we have described."

Therefore, the properties of walnut as pertains to firearms have been known for centuries, and nothing has changed today. Of course, the Portugese in the 1700's did not have carbon fibre and GRP. I can see the validity of using synthetics in a precision rifle, as they are resistant to changes due to environmental conditions. Military styled rifles such as the AR-15 or PE-90 are better served with plastic (although the AK-47 seems to get along just fine with wood). For virtually all other purposes, walnut is superior. To put a synthetic stock on a shotgun should be a punishable crime.

I suppose if you're in wet weather a synthetic would be better as would stainless. But I've never had a problem with a wooden stock. I'd use either, but I prefer the look of a wood stock. I wouldn't mind a nice 375 H&H in a stainless synthetic just to round out the collection.

I've got mostly wood stocked rifles. But I'm not adverse to a good synthetic either. :D

So, I'll keep my battered and weathered wood stocks, and let the dents talk to me as I get older.

Oh man thats a line of poetic beauty. I think I'm gonna cry.

I also agree that wood stocks return heat to your hands. As I hunt the bush too and usually carry rifle at the ready. I think plastic stocks would simply freeze to my gloves when it gets nasty in November down here in the Maritimes. Snow, freezing rain, gales and sub zero temps after the 11th give my vote to wood.

Plus...there's sumpin unappealing to synthetic stocks for me..they look too...well....American. (unnatural and disposable)

My mcmillan stocks have been used in -30F temperatures with no such problems, but then again they aren't plastic.

Is that a dry prairie -30 or a wet drizzly -10 with a -30 maritime windchill?

That is a true -30F.Windchill makes no difference on a riflestock.Once it hits the ambient temperature,it isn't getting any colder reguardless of the wind.
