Hi everyone...

So I have this Ross that was cut down by an angry beaver... it looks like the wood was scored and then snapped over someone's knee... but the barrel is full length... and the "cut" was under the barrel band... so I figured we had something to work with...

It's in other wise excellent shape with intact unit marks... 15 Bn CEF... Plus.. 1GBWY which I discovered is for the 1st Garrison Battalion of the West Yorkshire Rifles...

So I wanted to bring it back to it's full length... but man did this stock look bad...

Enter Stoggie... fabulous extension piece... and it's fitted perfectly... the grain matches... and I'm now in the process of oiling/colour matching... I think i might need to add a little "Character" to the extension piece... it's perfect... but the rest of the stock is well experienced!!!

The whole point of this thread is to give stoggie a big pat on the back... fantastic work...

I'll post more pics when the project is finished...

Oh... can anyone remember who made that sight removal tool for the ross rifles? Now I have to get the sights off to get the front band back on!

Man that bubba-job was #1 lame-o... good job on this fix!

Also nice to hear that it was chock full of stamps/imprints that could give you some sense as to it's history.
 
Makes me want to finish my Gewehr 98 restoration ever faster! What type of glue did Stoggie use as I will have to perform a very similar splice.

I too cannot wait to see the final product.
 
Thanks for the support guys... as a teaser... I've gotten 2 thick coats of BLO on it now... and the wood colour matches almost perfectly!!!

As for methods questions... Stoggie will have to answer them for you... I can't take any credit for this... this was all him... and he did a bang up job...

Anyone know what kind of slings these had? I've seen a couple repro leather enfield slings on EBay... same ones?

Thanks for all the kind words guys!

I used Gorilla glue, as it swells up to fill the voids as there was some missing wood from the poor sporterization job, plus I reinforced it with 1 dowel pin and 1 broken drill bit (because I needed something with a small diameter, otherwise I would have used a second dowel pin). Should be quite tough, but I wouldn't play bayonet practice with it.

I have used Probond wood glue on other extentions, and that worked just as well, but I have heard Gorilla glue has a stronger bond.

The slings were very similar to that. The originals were pretty much stitching vs. rivets, but close enough considering it's a repro.

Nice. Does anybody else wonder how many original WW1 sniper Rosses have been un-bubba'ed by a well meaning milsurp enthusiast? They were usually chopped down around the front band just like the rifle shown, with few other modifications.

True, but if it had a scope mount it should have some holes on the left of the receiver, plus Ross snipers have a scope number stamped on the buttstock as I've seen.
