Stoggie is the man: Ross Restoration Project IS COMPLETE!!

Original photos show that only some MkIII's, but not all that were converted into snipers had cut wood. Most likely done by Regimental Armourers, not Ross. As CanTom says, the 'scope number was whacked into the stock. Other solid evidence would be the walnut nibbled away in the receiver area on the left side, plus the drilled and tapped holes for the mount. Remember; both the first (1915) and second(1917) set of Sniper rifles are not a distinct variant of the MkIII; they were just production MkIII's pulled off the line, then fitted up with the available W&S prismatic 'scopes.

Ross resto candidate

This would be an excellent candidate for stretching.

If only time travel was possible! I would be going back and buying up the bubba's before bubba got to them!:D

Have two Ross rifles and they have not been "sportyized'

Thats a very nice restoration job.

Only Restoration I have had done was a N.Z. carbine where bubba had chopped the stock. Only 1500 made

According to RRS pg.181, Without Warning by Clive Law and Frank Iriam, In the Trenches a number of snipers used Ross rifles with no scopes using only the issue peep sights. If they were used in the 1st Canadian Division there is a good chance they were cut back.

My grandfather was a sniper with 54 Battalion ("The Kootenay Regiment") and carried two rifles right to the end of the war: a Lee-Enfield for fast work and a Ross for precision work. He didn't say if his Ross was "stripped" or not, but photos show that many were. With the ranges they were at, scopes could actually be a nuisance: my old friend Capt. George Dibblee told me that in the winter of 1915 they didn't talk loudly in the trenches because sometimes Fritz would comment on what they were saying!

Thanks again to stoggie for his craftsmanship... and also, thanks to Tiriaq for lending me his sight removal tool...

Now all I need is to find a sling... and she's done!
