I fail to see the urgency of digging them out ahead of time... care to explain your legal point of view on that, as it would make for an interesting defense in Court (even though the judge would just laugh at it). We're not talking about a box of christmas decorations here, but about restricted firearms that should legally be locked away AT ALL TIMES when not in use at the range or directly supervised by their owner.
I've had guns for MANY years, many more then the OP from what I can gather.... yet I never leave one unattended even when I'm cleaning it and need to go for a piss (I lock it away), and my gun cabinets are always double locked when I'm not removing or storing firearms in them. That's right, I secure my firearms at all times when I'm not near them even though I completely trust my family (which is pro-gun, responsible, law abiding and would never think of stealing from me or misusing a firearm). It's called prevention and it's just common sense... no need to be a rocket scientist to figure it out. Then there's also compliance with legal requirements governing firearm ownership in this country (and, like I said, those laws are in place to make up for the lack of common sense that certain individuals in society seem to suffer from).
I guess some people are not cut out for gun ownership, yet they have guns nevertheless and we ALL pay the price for their f*ck ups in the end... same as some people who shouldn't be driving, yet they do have licenses and cars (plenty of those mofos on the roads out there, say it ain't so!). I'm amazed that some of you guys on here actually defend such grossly irresponsible actions. It says a lot about your own level of responsibility too...
Maybe Wendy has a point after all. Sad...

So....... When you die and are in your 80's, I hope your executor of your estate is as cautious as yourself. Likely, they won't be. They'll be torn apart by grief, worrying more about dispensing your property and other legal arrangements than whether or not the relatives who show up are going to rob them. A little common sense shows this isn't someone who ordinarily handles firearms, it's a sweet little old lady who is perhaps more trusting in human nature than she should be. If you honestly think this 80 year old lady should be charged, I hope you are out of law enforcement. The law also has a base in common sense and decency, not just blind adherence to regulations.

In that case meh I hope he gets them back soon ####ty thing for family to do.
