I am headed for one last stone sheep hunt this August ..
and I have ALL my gear already packed..hhmm what ME excited..lol

I am deciding on my bullet selection..I already have some new cases..and some cci 200 primers..and some reloader 22 powder..and some 140 grain Hornady BTSP bullets..

I 'usually" place a self imposed limit of 300 yard shot (SO FAR not an issue )

Is this a reasonable BULLET for this application..I had been using 130 grain..but the specs on this make its seem a really flat shooting bullet..sighted in for 3" high @ 100 yards...and its "seems " to fit with my new scope..the Leupold BOONE AND CROCKETT RETICLE..

any one have any feedback on this bullet ???

cheers

The only thing I would switch out is the cci primers for a good magnum primer like Federal, it may be cold out and you are going to need better reliabilty than cci offers.

It will kill a sheep just fine. I like the premium TTSX and Nosler Accubonds more, since they open up more opportunity, but there is no ram alive that won't die due to a Hornady through the lungs...:)

I have fired thousands of handloaded 270 rounds, and I imagine the writer has, also. CCI primers are fine. Never had a single misfire of any type, with a 270 and standard primers igniting H4831 powder, warm weather or cold.

I have tried this combo and it shot exceedingly well in my Browning .270, I have a GREAT BUDDY who is doing up some for me..I will be hunting in August so cold will not be an issue...

It was more of a question on the bullet itself..the Hornady BTSP..I went with the BT and ALSO the 140 grain for long rang flat shooting with retained velocity and punch...I do not have the time to develop a new load for say a130 grain TSX...

Thanks ALL :bigHug:

have a good trip there srupp.that hornady 140 out of your 270 will be just fine .thats a good huntin bullet .

I have only harvested 2 Californian bighorns and both were used for the meat also...roasted ribs over the campfire..yummm

Here in BC it is mandatory to remove ALL edible meat.. and I personally LOVE SHEEP MEAT..

I have never used the 140 btsp on sheep but about a dozen Mulies didn't like it a bit (mostly all one shot kills--furthest out about 375 yards.)

It was my bullet of choice when I shot a .270.

44Bore

should work just fine. A max load of about 58-59 grs should give you 2950-3050 fps at the muzzle

you'll be fine with the primer too. Ive shot lots of regular large rifle primers when hunting coyotes at temps down to -30C

good luck

I have never hunted sheep, but I carried the 270 for many years as it wa sthe first bolt gun cartridge I owned at the ripe old age of 16. When I started into reloading the bullet you mentioned was loaded in my 700 and used year after year for Bear,, deer, and Moose. There are many new bullets on the market that do good things and are predictable upon impact but the old HDY Sps never let me down with my old 270. The only thing Different I use is the Powder, I wanted a Hodgdon Temp sensative powder. However the old 270 as good as she treated my has taken a backseat in the gun room, for no good reason I may add.

You will be fine, you just have to make the shot.
