Stoning/Polishing techniques?

I have a VQ hammer and sear in my 10/22, but there are a couple of other internal parts I would like to smooth out and polish. The stickied thread shows polished parts before and after, but makes no mention of the process involved. Any help you guys could offer would be greatly appreciated - Thanks!

I polished mine like this:

400 grit to get all the main roughness out
800 grit to fine it up more,
1500 grit final sandpaper

Polish up with dremel tool using polishing compound and polishing wheel on low setting (5000rpm)

Can the polishing be done by hand or would you suggest securing the parts in a vise? More as, how critical is it to maintain the "flatness" & "squareness" of the part?
