Stop banging the bottom your AR mags when you insert them.

Just north of Toronto, thankfully.
Had a good one at the range yesterday. The shooter inserts his AR mag on a closed bolt. It doesn't lock in so he delivers several convincing blows (he has to have a bruise) to the bottom of the mag. Click.

Shooter goes to chamber a round. Unable to get the bolt back. Goes to eject the mag. Can't get it out. It took him some work, eventually the magazine came out. The mag was pinned at a tight 5.

I see people slapping the bottom of their AR mags all the time. Stop it. Put the mag in, listen for the click and give it a little tug. Done. If things don't fit, don't force it. There's something wrong. Take a look.
 
Banging the bottom of the mag is an SOP. I sure as chit wont ever stop doing it. Good luck listening for a click while under stress.

If your rifle cant handle it figure out why and fix the issue. Or get proper equiment that can handle it.
 
There is nothing wrong with forcing the mag in. Militaries and police all over the world teach it.

Is it needed when you are calmly shooting at the range? No, its not life or death so its his choice. The fact that it did not come out probably means the mag or the rifle has an issue. Probably the mag though

"Bbanging" is a subjective word. If you are a 200 lb body builder your "banging" is probably 3X more than my "banging".

The key is not to use monster excessive force, but doesn't need to gentle either.

The problem isn't banging the magazine home the problem is the guy you were watching is lazy and ignorant to how his rifle works.
The first thing I do when I get a new magazine is load it full, if it doesn't have another half round worth of slack before it fully bottoms out I do something about it and shave a little off the follower or fix the rivet if possible.
If his mags are that tight he should pull his head out of his rear and lock the action open before inserting the magazine and then drop the bolt with the release button.
These are not complicated things to understand and it's up to the consumer to make sure his/her magazines are pinned correctly. The importers don't care if it's tight, as long as you can't fit a sixth round in they did their job and the magazine can continue it's journey to the retailer.

Don't imagine bashing on it is doing the feed lips on the mag any good. Expect reliability for this mag to get worse and worse with continued beating.
 
I think lots of people aren't familiar with their firearms and get operation instruction form Hollywood. Not just AR's but everything. Guys like to slam mags in harder than required for some reason. I've seen guys break tabs off mags becuase they wanted to slam rather than insert.
