Very interesting video, Ganderite! It dispels a lot of myths (like 380 is ineffective), but confirms what I've always believed: pretty much any gun is effective if used properly.
 
There is a flashbang effect to a mid to fullsize calibre - enough to load the drawers of any perp and make him depart forthwith and seek other employment if still able - but the small calibers are just a loud pop - and he and thee will have ringing, but hearing will return. Rifle indoors is incredibly loud - hearing does not return for a while - I have not tried shotgun indoors. Given druthers, I druther not shoot anyone, but I would double-druther not shoot loud things indoors again. If you really need shooting, please wait until I can get a gun which goes doink doink doink - then we can talk.
 
Sorry, but saying a .410 buck shell fired from a pistol is half as effective as a 12g long gun is ridiculous. He says it's a reasonable conclusion, maybe to someone with no experience shooting anything with them, and with little experience in general... Turned it off around there.

Basically it confirms my suspicions that any defensive HG calibre is equally effective with good shot placement.

Also to note, for protection of life and home defense one must think about over-penetration.
For some who aren't rural, perhaps a HG with hollow-point ammo is probably the safest bet.(for apartment/condo city dwellers)

A benelli m4 might be the first choice, but got forbid you ever end up in a home defense situation from criminals/thugs, you would not want to injure/kill your family or neighbors through the walls from misses or over-penetration.
 
Home defense can be poo-pooed by many as a phobia.

I live on a farm. Anyone can come here and do whatever they want.

I have had 2 guys break into the house, while my dog and I were in bed, asleep. They cut the locks off my gun cabinets and made two trips out, carrying all the guns they could carry. They would have done more, except my wife passed thru that room at 4:00 am, returning from a baby-sitting visit next door. She flushed the perps out the back door of the house, without a confrontation. They heard her coming.

What would have happened if they had met up??

A few months later, the police came to the door and said that their intel was that a local house was going to have a home invasion, to hit a gun collection. The police were warning those who might be the intended victims. This causes one to think of what guns were available and what ammo would be suitable.

Many years earlier I had to pull a gun on a stranger that broke into our house and was ###ually attacking a female teen aged guest.

Bad things happen every day. It may not always be the other guy. Rule #1. Have a gun.

That's the critical thing, and the reason why burglary should be punished far more harshly than what it is. Sure, perps might plan on a B&E to just steal some stuff, no one gets hurt, etc. But what happens if there is an encounter and they get caught? Now it is a very dangerous and unpredictable situation.

Great advice. If you have a long driveway you might consider putting a gate at the end. a retired policeman told me once and criminals don't like to have to walk down a driveway. they want to drive up to the house. a buddy who lives in Texas is always armed . he bought some kind of Czech Scorpion 9mm a newer one and he has it on the nightstand with a 30 or 35 round mag in it .

We have three houses here on the compound. Three families with 12 cars. A lot of traffic, plus Amazon and the mailman drop by just about everyday. We have considered a gate, but it would be a pain.

Funny enough, for that last break in, the 2 perps parked their car a half mile away and walked overland to the house. Not sure why.

Have a gun. (And 42 acres and a BobCat...)

I think you need a different dog , even when my dog is in the house he here’s stuff when I believe he was sleeping , most time he is guarding the yard at night outside
