Storage grease ? oil ? which products do you use ?

I was just wondering which products do you use for storage of your Milsurps ?

What doesn't stain the wood etc....

Different products for the ones you never shoot ?

I recently bought Cosmoline as its tried and tested. I think it will depend on the finish of your stock whether your chosen method will stain or not. Might not be a one size fits all option.

Never had an issue with using good ol fashion hoppes as well as rem oil. When I know something is going to be in the safe for a while i just put extra down the barrel and then run the cleaning rod through before shooting again.

RIG Rust Inhibiting Grease An extremely thin coat will provide excellent protection. I live on the very humid Florida Gulf Coast and have a couple of gun safes in a non-climate controlled garage. Rig has worked for me for over 30 years in that siuation. Renaissance Wax will also work on metal, wood and leather. I use it for edged weapons that are also stored in non-climate controlled areas.

I second the RIG endorsement. I used it for 3 year storage when out of country. I also used it when living in Tampa, FL - small world.

When I started shooting my Garand it turned me on to using NLGI-2 grease. I use a full synthetic EP-2 grease. It's more messy to apply than just dribbling on gun oil however it provides a more robust coating that doesn't just flash off over time like oil.

I use G96 on everything from new to old regardless the value or length of storage, never an issue in over 40 years

Back in the 70's some black powder shooters turned me on to Rust Check.
Doesn't drain off in storage like oil and attacks any salt residue.

While I use it on my car I would never use it anywhere near wood or even synthetic stocks

I spray some silicone lubricant on the metal parts to protect the finish and wood I wipe it down with ballistol. Had on rifle sit like that for 10 years without an issue.

Are you talking about long term storage or short term? Where do you live - dry or wet climate? Whats the humidity like where you store your firearms? Do you use anything to remove moisture from the air? How often do you use firearms?

A lot depends on the answers to these questions. I clean thoroughly, use CLP lightly on moving parts, before putting away I wipe all metal surfaces with WD40 and then do not handle. For items that I use less frequently I will put more CLP on the final patch through the bore and a wipe over with a rag with some CLP on it. I do not use any special oil/grease and have had no problems....
