Hi everybody,

I am new to reloading. I understand that the powder has to be stored in a wooden box (3/4" thick) which is make without iron fitting. The box has to be locked. My question is: How to install a lock without using iron, what lock to use which has no iron. To me this is a stupid regulation.

I would like to ask how you store your powder legally and practical.

Thanks.

As far as I read, the lock can have iron,

any fittings/screws used to make the box have to be made of non-ferrous metal, like brass, I don't believe this applies to the lock.

I store mine in a 1" box made with brass screws and fittings, secured with a $2 lock from canadian tire.

IMHO, the lock is a stupid regulation, a wooden box is not the most difficult thing in the world to break into, so I am unsure how much a lock will protect it.

Hope this helps

Unless you are building a powder magazine, just store it in a clean, cool, dry place in it's origional packaging. Under 10 kg, it's all you need to do legally.

I have read the same thing...my question is,,,,how come iron or steel can't be used,,why brass or copper ???

Because the people at NRCan who regulate explosives don't understand that smokeless powder is a flammable solid and not an explosive. They think it is the same as blackpowder and will ignite and explode by sparks from ferrous metals.

It's amazing that some stupid bureaucrats thought that ferrous material somehow makes sparks ! pathetic ! How come gasoline can be stored in an iron can !

In any case we have to comply with the law no matter how stupid it is !
May I ask Onagoth or anyone who make a wooden box with brass fitting, nails,, : where did you buy the brass nail, screws, etc....

Thanks.

Lowes has brass screws, I also picked up brass hinges and padlock fittings. still have to pickup a brass handle, but its good enough for now.

Not according to NRCAN Regulations.

Jeepers . . . I might have overcooked my box. 2 x 10's, 2 x 6's, and one inch plywood using steel nails, screws, and hinges. But it has worked for 17 years . . . can I claim grandfathering?
