So I just received my Steyr M9-A1 (love at first grasp, by the way), and I'm trying to figure out a preferable storage method. It came with a reasonable plastic hard case that I could probably use for transporting it to the range, but should I get a safe for home storage, or just double-lock the case for storage purposes as well? I don't know that I feel particularly good about keeping it permamently in a plastic case (regardless of how tough the plastic is) but that may just be an unfair judgement of the safety of keeping it in such a case.

Please note that for transporting restricted you need a trigger lock / disabling lock (and locked case), most cases that come with the gun do not allow room for the trigger lock.
Am happy with my cheap double layer foam case- Dosko SE 4 gun $22 or something, case not too big, plenty of room for 2 pistols, 8 magazines, spotting scope/small binocs, screwdriver.... The double layer is really useful to keep things separate / organized.

Depending on the foam. Most cases use open cell foam which acts like a sponge. Closed cell foam does not.

The M9 is a pretty skookum looking pistol. Congrats, and enjoy.
As far as padding a safe, the steel areas inside the safe I use for pistols are all protected by a rubber type mesh that I picked up at Ukranian tire. They sell it as non-slip matting for lining the interior of tool box drawers, but I think it works just great for avoiding dings/scratches/etc in the safe.
Keep in mind that this is okay for a stationary safe. If you're looking to move things around, a Pelican case might be worth looking at. Slap a good padlock on that, and they're pretty tamper resistant.

You could use rigid styrofoam inside the safe for the gun to sit on. It doesnt hold moisture but moisture can accumulate on top of it like anything else.
Most locksmith shops may have small safes, some secondhand ones that would be the right price for your restricteds.

I've looked at the small safes at CDN Tire, Staples & Walmart and those things are tin cans compared to the Gardall & Cashguard, particularly the Garrison brand at CDN Tire. Weight is one thing you can look at, that will tell you how heavily the safe is constructed for it's size. Under the Law those would qualify as safes (I assume), but don't offer serious protection from thieves.
Same safe at XS cargo for $40. Admittedly, you get what you pay for, but realistically, most smash and grabbers would try to pick it up, realize it's bolted down and not worth their time. A thief with the wherewithal to get into that safe, probably also has the ability to get in to a better safe, especially as I look at the things I keep readily available for them in my own toolbox and shed
Haha yeah, my thought is that the best way to keep it safe is probably to find a way to 'hide' the safe (as best as possible). Unless I spend like a grand, having a safe sitting there just provides a target saying "YO VALUABLES IN HERE", so domestic camouflage may be the best bet.
