Ive rencently been told by my family that they no longer want me storing ammo in the house for some stupid reason now. They claim its an insurance issue but personally I think its a load of BS. Anyway, thoeretically if I complied with this stupid demand, how would outdoor storage affect my ammo? It would be in wooden crates, stored in a wooden outdoor shed. The temperatures here vary greatly from as low as -30 in the winter and +30 in the summer, plus we get our share of rain. Would the ammo be adversely affected by the varying temperatures and moistures of outside? What about shooting freezing cold ammo in the winter?

Are there any concerns here about the life and use of the ammo?

Thanks

how long do you plan on storing it like that? months, years, or decades? i am sure it would be fine for months or a couple of years assuming it isn't up in the rafters where it can get really hot.

the cold won't matter to the ammo, it is the heat and humidity that will be the problem. that being said, it is probably more humid in the house unless you run a dehumidifier.

Find a old fridge that doesn't work put it in the shed, add a couple of hasps for padlocks and you should be good to go.It's locked, out of the elements and insulated to a certain degree. You can put a lot of ammo in a fridge:D

Find a friend that is not as anal as your family.

BTW, if your ammo stash was to get stolen off your families property after being "left outside unattended" (prosecutors words), I wonder if your parents would be also charged?
Just wondering...not sure how that would play out, as I keep mine locked up inside.

"...claim its an insurance issue..." Some insurance companies are anti-firearm and, being a self-regulating industry, are harrassing shooters with their glib ideas. None of which have any basis in law or facts.
"...the cold won't matter to the ammo..." It can. Some powders are temperature sensitive. Doesn't make the ammo dangerous though.
The old 'fridge is a good idea. Any chance of putting a low wattage light bulb in there?

Thats what Im trying to tell them but they are insiting that now, after me having my PAL for 3 years, they all of a sudden dont want ammo in the house anymore. They dont get it that a shiity wooden shed with a pad lock is probably not ample security for all my ammo and it is safer in the house. They are feeding me these bulls**t scenarios that " if our house catches fire, all the ammo going off with be dangerous:rolleyes:" and that " frirefighters will refuse to come in the house and extinguish the flames if ammo is present". I keep telling them that its a bad idea to keep it in a poorly secured shed but they dont f**king get it. They claim " well just replace the ammo if its stolen" yeah that will save me from a negligence charge in the courts. Anyway, Im going to basically refuse to remove it from the house and see what happens.

Hate to say it but its your parents house so what they say should go. If you have had your PAL for 3 years now you are at least 21 so go find your own place and then you can then make your own rules. When it comes down to it, its there house and they can make any rule they want no mater how little sence it makes.

the old fridge idea is good, thats what poor welders use to store arc electrodes in :D just add a cheap bulb in there and it should keep it at a nice 60F and no humidity.

Trust me Ive considered moving out but since im going to school in town, its hard to justify the extra expense. I make just enough money each summer to pay tuition, books, keep my vehicle on the road and a bit of gun stuff. I really cant afford to move out just yet and working during the school year is next to impossible with my course load. The good news is that im only home for 8 months a year and spend my 4 month summer working/living away from home. Im 21 in about 5 months, so I guess ive only had my PAl for 2.5 years, not 3, but thats besides the point. I even have my restricted class too but the parential verdict is no handguns, which is so rediculous since i own alot of long guns and have proven myself time and time again as being responsible but like most average non gun owners, the idea of a civillian owning ahandgun is absurd. Well see what kind of job I end up with next summer and If i can pull in more than minimum wage, Im going to really consider moving out. My family is great, but they are just nonsensical when it comes to gun related stuff. I guess I should be happy enough that borderline anti's allowed me to being any guns or ammo home in the first place.

Show them the mythbusters episode where they cook off some ammo in an oven. Explain to them that a jug of varsol is probably more dangerous.

Find a school locker and put the ammo in that?
An old pirates chest, metal hope chest style?
Ammo boxes stored under your bed?
All of the above locked of course.
Apartment style freezer with the light bulb?
All I can say is wow, unsupportive family.

Surplus military ammo cans, available at Princess Auto, each packed with desiccant inside, will keep your ammunition just fine, outside, in your shed. (Or buried, if you prefer.)

I wouldn't worry about theft.
