I looked online but couldn't find the answer to my question... Which is,

Is it safe to store lead in the open? I have my new ingots in a milk crate... But am concerned about lead leaching into the air... Is that a concern?

Lead in its solid form does not gas off. So it is safe that way. Just wash your hands and change your cloths after casting/handling lead before you play with the baby or handling the baby's toys etc......

The only danger to storing lad out in the open versus a sealed air tigh container I the lead will "oxidize" overtime. Thus leading to a dull lead ingot versus a shiny ingot. I store minin air tight ammunition cans, this limits exposure to the elements and any breathing living animal. The only time you have t worry about lead giving off fees is when it is a liquid state and reaching boiling temp.

Leaching into the air...

If left alone, no. If you are always packing them in and out there is a chance of lead oxide contamination. How much? I have no idea. Maybe I'm just overly cautious, but I store all my lead in my shed. Pure lead seams to oxidize the fastest and the most. I have ww ingots which still look the same as the day I cast them.

If it were me I would not store/cast lead in the same house that has kids under 10, but that's just me.

Thanks for all the kind messages!! It's our first :) due in August!!

I think I'm going to find a way to store it outside the house... what Idid manage to find online was that lead is extremely hard on babies and children.

I had my grandfather's crib as a baby... and ya know that sucker is lead paint... the crib is actually here waiting for the newborn as well, but I am going to have it blasted with nut husks and repainted... ya know, just in case the lead chips are the reason I am like I am.. ;)

if your storing them long term , maybe give them a light coat of paint rom a spray bomb .... it will keep all the lead goodness from escaping and prevent it from oxidising and losing more lead when you remelt it and skim dross off

This stuff I just made will be buckets soon I hope ;)

But perhaps if I manage to get a haul one of these days, I'll coat the ingots

I just store mine in the backyard lol, i don't cast bullets but I pour jigs for fishing and bottom bouncers so I only pour every couple years when i run low.
I have a couple hundred pounds in 4lb ingots, and then 3 big 100lbs slugs.
I met a fella at work who had melted a bunch of ballast lead into paint cans, a 1gal paint can is about 100lbs; they are very tough to work with in this size.
