Storing Ridiculous Quantity of Reloaded 9mm?

Anybody use the plastic "dry boxes" that stores like Le Baron sell.

They look like ammo cans and have a rubber seal around the lid to keep moisture out.

We have used the smaller ones and they work OK. The big ones are not strong enough to hold a lot of ammo. I also found that they don't seal all that well, the ones we have anyway.

Of course I have to ask, what's ridiculous about 5000 rounds?

To me ridiculous is somewhere around the tensile limits of your basement floor.

If 5000 is ridiculous, I don't know what you'd call this?

I am suprised that my reloading room/ammo stores have not fallen through the floor and left a 10 foot by 20 foot area where ammuntion, components, primers, powder all used to be.

I am seriously going to move it downstairs, but the shear volume of it scares even me. Do you think I can call a moving company to move it down two flights of stairs?

50 ammo cans @ 75lbs each

3750lbs in just ammo cans alone. Its gonna be a long move......

I'd just go downstairs and prop the floor joists up temporarily until you can twin the existing ones. :)

Howdy ; Watch out for plastic tool boxes . Had a box full walking through a Hilton hotel in Detroit when yea !THE HANDLE SNAPED OFF ,BOX HIT THE LOBBY FLOOR . pUCKING 38S AND mtm boxs across the floor . So there I was on me hands and knees scooping up arm full of rolling bullets . The receprion desk just stared and the suit and tie guys stared straight ahead and walked on . Darn glad I was in USA .

adriel,

Before you plan to store your handloads, be sure to pick up at least 10 more pounds of powder. Save your money, and get some military ammo cans for ammo storage. Those cans are inexpensive, strong enough to hold that much weight, almost completely waterproof and easy to find.

I have a suggestion. Take a bunch to the range and let er buck:p

They will be easy to haul empty.

Most Important Thing ....

Be 100% sure of your load BEFORE going into mass production. I know a shooter that had to pull 2,000 bullets, because his handloads were too hot.

I put the loaded ammo into a styrofoam holder first, so I can inspect all the primer seats first, and to count them before dumping into a ziplok. I also made up a bunch of tags that I fill out with all the load data and date, and drop into the bag. All of the bags get stored in princess auto special ammo cans. Going to a match, just grap a bag and go.

Oh yeah. This will be for 3 guns, so I'll be checking function and accuracy in all 3 before I let 'er buck on 5k. Why do you think I need 10 lbs more powder though? According to my calcs, 3 lbs of W231 should do the trick at 4 grns per round.

Princess auto ammo cans sound like the ticket.

I don't think your powder will qo quite that far. In times like these, it doesn't hurt to have extra powder. You've got a great supply of brass. You'll probably want to reload those cases again one day when powder is not quite as available. I assume that's why you're storing that much ammo. Obama is already having a major effect causing serious shortages of all reloading components. It's better to have too much than too little.
