Hi all,
I don't see this question addressed anywhere so I'll throw it out there. The cheap surplus ammo won't stay cheap for long so I've stocked up with a few cases. I don't really want to store it in the house because that's where the guns are. The problem I face is that my garage is detached and unheated, about -6 right now but we'll see a few weeks of much colder. Will the temperature fluctuations affect the ammo?

It should not be affected by cold, in fact it could help keep it in good shape. Heat and moisture are your enemies with ammo!

Avoid going from freezing to warm, condensation is moisture!

Yep, ammo stored "separately" from the firearm does not have to be locked up.
AFAIK there is no clear legal definition of separately but the dictionary definition is: 1. to keep apart or divide, as by an intervening barrier or space:

RCMP CFC website says;
Store the ammunition separately or lock it up. It can be stored in the same locked container as the firearms.

Store it somewhere so as to minimise the chances of your wife discovering just how much you actually spent on the last few 'really good deals'.......trust me on this one......

iF THE SURPLUS AMMO IS NOT in sealed spam cans, I transfer it to 50cal or 20mm steel ammo cans, and label them with a paint marker. A 20mm can holds the 1320 of 7.62x39.

Does your house have a cold room in the basement? I would rather store ammo in the house than the garage for general security reasons. Freezing it is ok if it is in sealed containers.

Thanks guy. I know I'd be breaking no laws storing it inside I just like the idea of the physical separation of the two incase of a break-in. smoothbore75, I no longer have to justify how much I spend on my hobbies to my wife. A long time ago when she used to complain about how much I spent on diving I got a dry-suit for her, best trade I ever made.
