Stovepiping

If you want a more accurate powder charge.. run 4 (or more) thru the press..dump the powder from them onto the scale, divide by 4 (or whatever you used).. you'll probably be out at least .1 gr from what you thought you were throwing..

I agree that if you're flaring a case, you need to tighten the mouth back up to ensure proper chambering, but I don't personally consider the end product a "crimped cartridge". My revolver rounds are crimped, my semi-auto rounds are not, even if I run them through a Lee FCD. That said, I've never felt the need to flare 9mm cases, and therefore never felt the need to "crimp" them.

I still don't see how this relates to stovepiping. Once the primer is struck and the bullet propelled out of the barrel, the case expands until it meets the chamber walls. Only then does extraction begin, and at this point, the degree to which the case was crimped is irrelevant. If I'm missing something, feel free to enlighten me.
 
I was having extraction/ejection problems with a 9mm. One of the issues ended up being I didn't have enough crimp. As the fired case was coming out it was catching on the leading edge of the next cartridge in the magazine. It would cause it to flip around and stovepipe.

I tightened my crimp a tad and and most of my problem went away.

I don't know anyone who doesn't crimp 9mm.

If you bell the case enough to put a bullet into it you have to crimp it to allow it to feed.

It is not whether or not you crimp 9mm it is how much you crimp it.

I take the bell out and then a little extra. Smooths out any issues with feeding and interfering with smooth extraction that I have encountered in the past.

Lee Factory Crimp Die is very popular with most of the 9mm shooters I know.

+1 - given the shape that 9mm brass sometimes ends up when you seat a bullet a Lee Factory Crimp is almost a necessity. NOT crimping 9mm can cause very severe problems if the bullet sets back into the (already small) case on feeding. Pressures as high as 60,000 cup have been measured with bullets set back in 9mm cases.
 
I also believe that a slight crimp can be a plus.The case will hold onto the bullet a touch longer and give you a better and more consistent burn on your powder.

A better burn will mean more power for your slide to cycle .( throw the brass further )

If you like the lite loads you could always lighten up the recoil spring.

ya, i figured it was the easiest way to weight in the cartridge. if not, i would have to pour it back into the powder measure and mess around a bit. what's the difference if i zero out the scale with the little scoop on it or zero it out with the actual cartridge on it.

This would only work if every one of your cases weighed exactly the same. Maybe they do though, I've never weighed my 9mm brass, so I couldn't say.

Worked great, no stovepipe, a little more kickback, looks like problem solved. Now I think i will make 100 for next weekend.

The weight of the cases is irrelevant.

Put the case on the scale.

Zero the scale

The case now weighs zero for the purposes of measuring the charge.

All my loads for IDPA and IPSC are measured this way. We are not talking pinpoint long range accuracy here :)
