Straight Cases - Common cause for case life?

Ok, so today I was out shooting the Model 94 375BB around the Farm, sniping rocks from 100-150meters away.. Suprisingly the misses were minor and Deer or Game would be in trouble.


What happened though was a Case Gave a Crack....... that's all ill touch on for now.

But with Straight Walled Cartridges say 45-70 / 375BB down to the 357 mags an such... Whats the major causes of incidents where the Brass is pronounced Useless?
At which area is most common for damage? top bottom middle crimp etc?

The only straight wall cases I have had thrown away were a split/crack at the mouth. Crimping causes that area to eventually get hard and crack. Use as little crimp as you can get away with and they will last a long time.
Loose pocket could happen in heavy loads.

Agree with Seagull's info (cracking could very well be caused by other factors as well - but I've only experienced case mouth cracks). I shoot/reload 444 Marlin in two rifles - a JM 444S Sporter and a Winchester AE Black Shadow Big Bore. I have never annealed any of the 444 cases, but have seen the odd case where it seems a crack is started or imminent, I examine each case under magnification before even trimming or priming (yes, I'm anal). I've been able to keep the issue to a minimum since I trim to a specific length (the suggested "Trim-To" in my primary reloading manual) prior to EVERY reloading, effectively trimming away a smidgeon of brass in the area near the case mouth. With the tubular magazines, I'm forced to crimp, and the normal F/L resizing dies (mine are RCBS) do an ugly crimp job, not even/concentric and a deep crimp which is harder on the brass. My buddy with a 45-70 started using a Lee Factory Crimp Die on his, and he tells me it's not as tough on the case mouth as a standard F/L die crimp.

I've just ordered one of the Lee FCD's for my triple 4 and will see how it works out - they're pretty cheap, so I figured nothing ventured nothing gained.

People had a problem some types of brass in their 32 H&R mag, brass cracking down the length of the case. Im not sure if they ever figured out what caused it, i was reading about it when i was build my LE in 32 HR mag. And about the round in general. Some stright wall cases do that.
