I'm looking for a spotting scope in the under $1K range, mainly for target shooting off the bench and from the prone position. Can any advise their thoughts on whether I should go with a straight or angled eye piece? I have no experience with spotting scopes, so I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

At first, I decided to choose straight eye piece spotting scope (didn't buy it yet) but later, I realized that the angled eye piece is a better choice for the prone shooting. You will need to tilt your head back or lean the head to the side while looking at the straight scope. You just turn the head slightly toward to the angled eye piece.

Just a thought.

Yup, what he said. I just bought my first really good SS this past summer - a Pentax 100ED. It has no factory option for angled, so I found a custom telescope dude in the USA (Harry Siebert) who kindly made me a 90deg "diagonal". I think the 80ED does, and if I could do it again, I'd do that. You can jack the magnification WAY up with different eyepieces on either of them.

Angled is better on the bench, or prone, or standing.

Unertl used to make a 90degree angled eyepiece spotting scope for target shooting ... not too many others have been made expressly for the range afaik ... the "standard" for a shooters spotter would be a 45degree eyepiece and that is the most practical for any prone work you plan to do.

We find that an angled spotting scope is a little bit more versatile in terms of working for different shooting angles. It's great for uphill and flat shooting and since most spotting scopes can be turned on their side, you can also easily use them for downhill shooting. I find that a really good bang for your buck is the Vortex Viper HD 15-45x65 if you are trying to stay under $1000. If you would like any more information, or would like to talk more on the subject, please feel free to give us a call at our number below.

Best regards, Anthony
