Looking a getting my first lever gun, gonna be a Marlin in .45/70 . Looking at three models the SBL, GBL, GS

On the SBL and GBL love the larger magazine capacity and large loop. Ghost sights on SBL are nice but can be added to other two and is also almost $400.00 more than GBL or GS. Also the GBL and GS are same pricepoint the GS has small loop and magazine but is still ###y as hell. The Gs also has a straight stock vs pistol grip on the other ones, anyone notice a functional differance between two stock?

Help me choose

Ben

Shoulder them all. What do you find fits you best????
Its your comfort and shooting style that will be the judge.

"You'll likely find the pistol grip nicer to shoot and the straight grip nicer to look at ."

This I think is my problem, Also anyone running SBL is extra cost worth it, or is larger mag tube over kill, loops and sights can be added changed on all

Pistol Grip and full length mag tube would be my choice for looks and comfort.

Had a guide gun sold that and kept the SBL. A few others I know have said of all the heavy hitters they have and shoot the straight stock 4570 is the most brutal.

Strait grip for shooting off-hand pistol for bench, but who really shoots off a bench..............

My preference

Id go for the GS and add the xs sights if you put more then 4 rounds into an animal your doing something wrong so extra tube is moot except it looks nice

`I had an older 1895 with the straight grip , I find my newer , pistol gripped 45/70 a lot more comfortable to shoot .

I had many straight gripped JM 1895 GG's in 45-70 over the years, 6 I think. Always hated the straight grip with real full house loads but lived with it. I did my father one up a few years back for Fathers Day with a pistol grip. I liked it a lot and it was much more enjoyable to shoot.

I doubt I could pry it from his hands now.

Thanks for the replies have made my mind up yet but keep opinions coming. Think the SBL is out it is a georgeous gun but don't think can justify the extra dough, have other guns on my list to buy also.

Look at the GBL instead. Same overall gun but blued answer missing the XS stuff . I will say that my SBL my wife bought me when they first came out is one of about 3 guns I'll never sell.

As Royzo says, shoulder them both and see which one is the better fit for you. C.T.Smith makes an observation I agree with regarding off-hand shooting. I have only straight grip stocks on the Marlins (except the 30-30) and the BLRs. For me, they are the best stock design for any rifle. I appreciate I may be an ergonomic exception.

my opinion has been covered but I'll reiterate...

straight grip for aesthetics
pistol grip for comfort
full length mag tube for looks and balance
I think those rails look ridiculous on a lever rifle, just like those huge loop levers.

That said the only pistol grip Marlin I have right now is my .444.
The straight stock is no detriment in my 39a or 1894 44mag and the 1895CB is straight stock only, and I can live with that.

It's all about personal preference, like most things...

I've posted this previously, but I did have one in a straight stock configuration, a Marlin 1895GS.

Liked it, until I started pushing the heavier bullets, loaded to a level modern Marlins are capable of handling. Found it could be a little hard on the fingers and my Son wanted it in the worst way so that's where it went. I replaced it with a GBL,;) along with a Magnum Research BFR, just to keep it company:d.

Call them 'The Band of Brothers':p.
