I've had both PG and straight grip. End of the day, I settled on this one. Frankly, these guns are heavy enough without the extra mag capacity and more wood (PG stocks are physically larger/heavier). I bought mine to actually carry in the woods on real hunting outings - the weight savings are felt more than any comfort gain for the rare times I have to fire it at a living animal. At the range, sandbagged, I feel no difference in comfort. YMMV.
Scope is an older Leupold Plainsman 2.25X with a german post reticle in 7/8" talley mounts. Perfect for close-in snap shooting. No turrets to snag on anything either. I sure wish Leupold still made the Plainsman... I'd buy several

It's worth it, by the way, to get an aftermarket brass follower that is Leverevolution compatible. The OEM plastic one is just awful.

I like 'English' on my upland bird gun
But, on a big hard kickin' lever gun, to help handle the recoil effects,
I 'prefer' the pistol grip configuration.

Either way I think you would be happy but the Xs sights on the SBL are very nice addition
You're right. Shortly after I acquired my GBL, I got a replacement 1895 Lever Rail System from Brownells. Quite an improvement and allows me to move the longer eye relief scope ahead a little further.
