Strange M305 failure to feed issue.

First step would be to get some snap caps to experiment with and keep the live ammunition out of it.

No worries, those are not live rounds, the power was removed and primers blown and bullets placed back in.

It looks to be a new rifle ???
From the scratches on the round I would say you have burs / sharp / snags in the lips of the mags

Does it pass the tilt test

It's a dummy round that has been loaded many times, that's why it's all scratched up.

Yes, passes tilt test flawlessly.

When you take the rifle apart what does the bottom of the bolt look like --??

Here are photos of the bolt.

In some of the pictures it appears that the extractor is not seating all the way down and consequently not being able to grab the neck of the case.
I would take the bolt apart and check the extractor spring etc.

With the rifle held level. The trigger group removed, op-rod and Spring installed.

Move the op-rod to the rear in a smooth slow motion.

Does the bolt drop below the safety bridge?

Nope, bolt is staying above the bridge. I think my rifle is a 2014 made model.

Tried some NATO surplus ammo as well, sticks in same place though again less frequently. I looked at some photos of USGI extractors and the cut at the bottom on the front of mine seems off. I ordered a USGI bolt guts kit from treelinem14 and we'll see how it goes with that. Polished the inside of feed lips on my mags as well but I don't see that affecting this problem.

Dollars to donuts, it's a mag issue.

I just realised that saying doesn't work anymore.... Donuts cost more than a dollar at the local Timmy's.....

Sorce some different magazines, see if that solves the problem. You must have a buddy, who also has a M14, that can try your mags. I'd offer up a couple of mine, but I believe we're about 4000 km apart!

Ha ha thanks, I should be able to find some additional non-Norinco mags to try out soon.

Still curious on this.

I have both pinned 5/20 and 5rd only mags, this symptom happens with both.

Oprod spring guide?

I'm just thinking if you're having the problem with all the mags you've tried, there's a possibility the mags are being held too high at the front, and as the bolt pushes the round, the tension of the rounds below and the mag a touch too high is causing the mag to eject the round straight up, skipping to the side and getting wedged.

This could be totally out to lunch but if the problem persists with the mags you are going to try, it's worth looking into but it won't be surprising if it's strictly the mags that are the issue.

I have seen that happen in the past, but only on bedded rifles where the guide isn't clearanced enough in the bedding so it binds. Basically it gets pinched between the action and the bedding compound at the front of the mag well.

If the guide is aftermarket, and a tight fit, the only trouble should be inserting a mag.

I had a similar FTF happen to me, but never while manually feeding the 1st round.
My issue was that the S&J recoil spring is too strong for Norinco copper washed ammo, and switching back to the original spring fixed the issue.

OP, if the rifle passes the tilt test, I would try different mags...

Have been making sure I pull it all the way back and let it go, at the range the other day I would place the round back in and it would take several tries before it would load, if you give the charging handle a good smack it will load. The gun has a S&J recoil spring and M14.ca guide rod however it does the same thing with the stock Norinco spring as well. Happens with two separate unmodified Norinco 5/20 mags. Only have fired Norinco 7.62, haven't tried other ammo yet.

Yes, passes the tilt test perfectly.

Does it do it with a stock recoil spring guide or any other spring guide as well?

With the oprod spring & spring guide removed, put everything back and check to see if there is anything binding up on the op rod and stock. The action should slide easily back and forth.
Also ( I know this sounds stupid) but are you making sure that you arent holding the op rod with your hand while you fire the rifle?

I only time I've ever had a FTF on my any of my norcs has been either due to interference with the op rod or the shooters hand or with an area of the stock.
