i seem to be attracting strange firearms. This one is a No.4 Mk1 with matching no's on bolt and wrist, but, it has a flash eliminator
And different wood. It is very well done, looks like factory, but I am thinking home modified.
Any info or comments on this would be welcome.

Thanks

Looks like one of the guns altered by Santa Fe, a dealer in the US, when No.5s were selling for more than No. 4s.

If it was converted by Santa Fe arms it would be stamped on the receiver or barrel. If it isn’t then some enterprising sole modified it, the flash eliminator is readily available from numrich in the US.

Is the cone separate from the front sight guard? Is the front sight guard secured by a cross screw? Does the cone have a set screw? The one piece No. 5 unit had an integral bayonet lug.

Have examined several of these, hider slides onto No4 lugs and secured by a set screw with various success.

Yup, they did that with No1 rifles as well. Some of them even had slots cut across the funnel to pretend to be compensators and decrease muzzle jump. Didn't work of course but some of us thought they looked cool at the time and No5 rifles were hard come by back then and actually sold at a premium to No1 and No4 rifles.

Pretty sure that's Winston Churchill's personal rifle. If not, it's a good copy. :p

Seriously, it is either a home made set up or, as mentioned, a Santa Fe. Kinda nifty looking.

The company that made them was Golden State arms trading under the name of Santa fe arms
They are just cut down No.4 rifles with a CAST aluminum flash hider mounted with one set screw holding it to the bayonet lug as from the end 1 1/8 of barrel has been cut off.
They have been known to blow off. There are two types of rear handguards: one with a metal nose cap and the other is just the standard handguard sanded down to fit the profile.
What a blast from the past as those go back to late 50's and early 60's.
You sometime see them advertised as RARE British Commando rifles.

The other problem is that the backsight graduations will no longer read correctly due to the declination changing so much with the shortened barrel.

Golden State Arms also made No 4 sporters, essentially identical to the Parker Hales. I have one, its well made. Looking at the gun, its clear they used the same components as the Parker Hales - Sile stocks, front sights, etc.
