Strange question

How would a .223 Remington compare to a .44 Win Mag? Just poking holes in paper basically.

I have been on a mission to buy a Thompson Center ProHunter handgun and having no joy at all. The gun comes factory in .223 or .308. Any other combos are custom. This is in a 15 inch bbl. I did a little google and looked at some books I have and the energy is near enough the same and at least one load uses the exact same powder charge and brand. Of course the projectiles are much different, like 40-60 or so grains vs 180 to maybe 300 grains. I expect it would be more difficult to hand load a jacketed case. I have all the reloading stuff for both rounds. My plan would to light load the .223.

At this stage, I can't seem to find this gun in Canada and being the holidays it is a wash. I went to every site sponsor on the top of the page and found none, plus some google searches as well. I am told there are three main dealers for T/C in Canada. No luck contacting them during the season.

In the long term I will custom order a .45 Long Colt (or .454 Casull) and likely a .357 Mag bbl. But there is a 2 month wait basically.

Welcome to the hard facts of buy T/C handguns in Canada. Supply is limited and nothing kept in stock in Canada. Since S/W took over t/c the calibers and options have diminished greatly. I have first generation pistols and it is sometimes easier to find barrels for them than to find new pistols and barrels. I gave up on ordering new because of the hassle of getting stuff from the states. The older stuff has a lot more caliber options. I am currently at 10 calibers, most are scoped.

These are all Contenders, not ProHunters. The basic problem is a Contender is a HG. Even if you have a Contender rifle bbl, it still has a HG serial #. If Trudeau decides to take away our HGs than it is a HG and gone. A ProHunter is a rifle, I would have a rifle and a HG. Parts are interchangeable. Trudeau can take away the small HG (trigger) but I keep the rest. That make sense?

Ok thought you said ProHunter handgun. But yes, if you are getting it because you can add the rifle stock, it makes perfect sense to future proof the package. Is that not the same with the Contender, though? They made stocks for them at one point didn't they.
 
I have a Pro Hunter rifle. Want to buy a hand gun. Just to be legal basically.

The Contenders could be made into a rifle but they were registered as a HG so legally you couldn't wonder around in the woods with one. This is what I was told at any rate.
