Strange thing happened last night...

So anyway, my wife and I were sitting around talking last night (about guns) and she was started to get fed up with all the talk so we moved on to the next topic, camping. She loves camping, loves fishing, but hates the thought of bears walking around in the area. So, last night she came to the conclusion that I MUST buy a new gun.. I honestly had no intention of the conversation leading this way, but it happened. So I quickly jumped on the opportunity as I figure this is a rare occurence in most households. Anyway, long story short I was planning on saving some money up over the next few months to put a scope on my new .25-06 which I bought last week and she said forget about the scope, i will get you one for christmas, start saving for a new gun!

I thought this was worth sharing.

Anyway, more to the point of the post. I started a thread a while back which is still going about what to use as a bush gun, which has had lots of responses. I was thinking I could double up this gun as my deer\moose\bear bush gun, as well as my camping "defense" gun. I think for these purposes I want to go with a big bore, something like 45-70. Anyone think of another option that would fit this use? Also, if you are thinking about parting with a rifle like this in the next few months let me know so that I can contact you when I have the cash.

Congratulations - not so much for getting the OK to buy a new gun, but for having an intelligent wife!

I think the .45-70 will meet your requirements, but it is at it's best when handloaded with hard cast flat point cast bullets. When you are in the market for bullets contact Ben Hanuck on this forum. I got some 480 gr bullets from Ben for a pal's .458, and these look very promising.

If you don't handload, a short pump or auto 12 gauge shotgun loaded with Brenneke slugs is probably your best bet. Big bore bolt action rifles can quickly become excessively expensive to purchase and shoot regularly, so if you are tempted to go that route, make sure it is what you really want. I packed around a Ruger #1 as a bear gun for a couple of years. It was an affordable short big bore, but in the end I decided it was not the answer as a protection rifle. I replaced the #1 with a Brno 602 which I modified extensively, and will satisfy any game shooting situation I am likely to face.

There are modifications I would make to the Marlin rifle, but if that is the rifle you choose, shoot it for a while and see for yourself what improvements should be made. What ever gun you choose, your wife should probably be encouraged to shoot it as well.

Congratulations on the forthcoming purchase, but I'm glad I don't have to consult my wife, the kids, the dog or the local shaman for permission to buy/sell/trade guns and accessories. :)

I use this for hiking ( back country not prov. park :p ) and camp gun.
its small. cheap. light weight.
Fabarm 12 ga. loaded with slugs . its scares most hikers but for some reason they seem to stay close if there is a bear in the neighbourhood:D

My choice is a Win 94 Trapper in 45LC loaded with 325gr hard cast FN gas checked bullets pushed to 1550fps (can go faster but see no point).

Recoil is quite light in this tiny lever carbine.

I thought about the 12ga and other larger levers but the 45LC will do camp duty for bears, has 9shots if needed, and the size/weight/recoil is manageable for my wife.

Sometimes, you are the one that needs saving.

Jerry

Any of the Marlins in 45/70 are tops...if you like short and compact: Guide gun....If you like sleek: Cowboy gun or MXLR....they all make great hunting guns and not just for close range work. There are some very nice peep sight options out there that are less exp. then a scope and more effective. I also got a "large loop lever" for one of mine and it allows me to shoot with thick gloves on, and also prevents sore hands from the recoil of 480gr. bullets going 1850fps. You've made an excellent choice...does your wife have any sisters??

OK, my suggestion would be a Remington 7600 Carbine in 30/06 loaded with 180-220 gr bullets. Williams receiver sight or a 1x4 Leupold.

It's a funny thing. When guys are talking about stalking the fierce and unpredictable whitetail deer, they often want a reliable bolt action rifle. They cite the bolt action's attributes of simplicity, easy loading, and outright reliability.
When the talk turns to a camp defence rifle though, the first choice is often the relatively complex, slow to load, lever action.
Don't get me wrong, I really like the Marlin and Winchester rifles. A short, handy, 308 bolt action is probably even better though. Ruger makes a good one. With the advent of the 338 Federal, a short carbine in that caliber would make a great camp rifle. Regards, Bill.

................Hence a trader rating of 99:eek: :D :D :dancingbanana:

Leeper, I like what you have said, and I was also thinking about this as well. I was thinking it would also be nice to have a short bolt action rifle. I like the looks of the Ruger M77 Mark II Frontier Rifle, it looks like it would be a handy bush gun as well as camp protection. Are there any other manufacturers that offer a compact bolt action?

What did you do, use the Jedi mind-trick or something? If that was my wife, I'd be VERY suspicious.....:runaway:
