Stratton question, Colt Mk.III

The Lithgow machinery was sourced from Pratt & Whitney. The story is that it was set up at the Colt factory to "prove" the production line. While there some complete guns were produced.

There was some new info about this @ a year ago. IIRC they no longer believe that Colt was involved?? Maybe it was Savage?

An interesting story is that the "Enfield Inch" and the "conventional inch" are different dimentions. Apparently P&W was not supplied the Enfield Inch info, so the first guns & machinery were out of spec.

Australia was forced to source the equipment from America for the same reason that Canada ended up with the Ross series of rifles rather than Enfields. Quite simply the Brits refused to set up factories which would compete with those in the "Mother Country".
