I'm looking for a decent optic under $200 to marry with my Savage MKII, hoping to reach the gun's potential at 200+ yards. Have checked out a few Vortex scopes but find mixed reviews on their less expensive models... Any ideas?

I picked up a used Vortex Viper 4-12x40 PA from the EE for a little over your budget for my new Mark II TR... just had it to the range for the first time today.

She's a tack driver at 50yards and I can ring a ~5"x10" bell out at 250 yards 3/5 times with it.

Really like the scope but it's at its absolute max elevation out at that distance and I have to use the BDC reticle in addition to 24 MOA of elevation. I'll probably pick up a EGA 20MOA base.

Another option is the Burris Signature rings with the offset inserts. +.020 rear & -.020 front would give you a lot of adjustment at the longer range.

I just mounted a Weaver 15 power on mine. Haven't shot it yet. It seems like a really nice scope and I only paid $150 for it (used) shipped.
