Strictly loudness

The shooter doesn't notice the increased loudness. It's the people next to him that do. I've owned factory ported guns and tested ported barrels against non-ported in the same gun. I don't think porting provides any benefit and believe it isn't worth the bother.

I've had a few shotguns with ported barrels, and they didn't seem to be louder than any of my non ported barrel shotguns. The ports are supposed to reduce muzzle jump,

I don't notice any differance in noise. I do notice a differance in felt recoil. Especially with slugs. I have 2 wingmasters, one ported one not, everyone that has tried them, one after the other notices a differance.

Loudness

Tests published in Shooting Sportsman Magazine suggests that porting does not produce any noticable difference in either recoil or muzzel jump. They surmised it was just another gimmic to sell more guns --- besides being bastards to clean.;)
Cheers.

loudness

i used to own a ported short barrel valtro pm5
it was the loudest gun i had ever fired!
if you shot it without earplugs your head was ringing for a long time!

i don't notice the difference between my non-ported PM5 and my friends ported PM5... both will make your ears bleed with 3" mag slug's but mine is a lot easier to clean.
