Stripping and Cleaning a Ruger Mk l Pistol

I bought this pistol at an auction sale 18 years ago and it never really worked very good from day one, which was probably why it was in the auction. I had heard all the horror stories about getting these things back together after having them apart, so I left it alone. Finally it got to the point where it was pretty much useless, so I took to Youtube and looked at various videos on the subject. So, I got it apart and couldn't believe the crud and crap inside it. I gave it a good cleaning and lubing and got it back together on the third try. I had it to the range this past Sunday and it runs like a champ. To anybody else in the same circumstances, spend a little time on Youtube, it really helps.

I sold one because I hated the stripping/assembly. That was pre-youtube.

I hear the new models are much easier to strip and clean.
 
I bought a mk3 almost 10 years ago and the guy behind the counter was going to show me how to disassemble and reassemble it. He was very relieved when I said I already knew how, because he wasn't sure he could figure out how to get it back together again. They're not that tricky if you pay attention taking them apart and have a look at how everything fits.

No. The cleanings are so far apart I can't remember what I learned the first time.

The problem is that it runs forever. I used to do a lot of 22 shooting with it and would clean it about once every 2 years.

This involved taking it apart and scrubbing the parts with brake Cleaner.

There is a trick to putting it together, It involves the hammer strut, or something.

If I cleaned it every 6 months I would probably remember the trick. But after 2 years it was like the first time all over again.

Still one of the very best pistols I own.
 
If you don't do it very often, they can be a bit tricky, no mystery to it , just have to hold it at the right angle so the strut drops in right.
 
The 3rd gens are the worst, as they have the magazine safety. Every time you need to drop the hammer, in goes an empty mag, then out, then in etc. Once the mag safety rubbish was in a bin they were back to 'normal' like the 1's and 2's. Don't touch a MK4 though, you'll never want to go back.
 
The Ruger Auto Pistol was the first pistol I ever bought back in 60's, I still have it and love it and use it. Being a bit anal, I clean the pistol after each range session. Once you know how to take the pistol apart and back again, it's easy. It takes all of 30 seconds to put it back. The only problem I've found is that it doesn't seem to like CCI ammo. I get the occasional failure to feed for some reason, maybe one in 20-30 rounds. FTF gets worse after 50-70 shots it seems. It could be the wax coating on the bullets building up in the chamber. Anyone else has these problems? Federal bulk ammo works flawless though.
