I have read NIC's requirements for refinishing for Cerakote & I understand 100-120 grit Aluminum Oxide would be best.

To you that have worked with these products like Cerakote, Dura Coat, KG or Brownells finish.

My question: could I use a Soda Blaster for this prep work? I only have 3 projects to do at this time & buying a new Blasting cabinet would cost me some $$$ I don't really need to blow.

Before I bought my first cabinet, I just used a cheap Princess Auto siphon feed gun. I also used TSC black sand for the medium. Working outside I shot the parts and the sand was then brushed into my interlocking brick patio. Googles, gloves and N 95 mask are a necessity.

soda blasting will not give enough adhesion. I also use a cheap gravity blaster and aluminium oxide, sweeping up the sand later..

I'm having a hard time finding 100-120 grit Aluminum Oxide in my area. So I asked this question. I do own a Princess Auto siphon feed gun already.

PART 2 Question? anyone prep a carbon fiber barrel for Cerakote? worried about acetone bath & baking process with the carbon wrapped barrel.

Baking soda wont be enough for the paint to adhere to.
You need to 'etch' the surface for the paint to grab and cure to, baking soda, plastic and even glass will not give you an etched surface, but more of a polished to dimpled surface. Great for removing old finish and rust, but not paint prep.

If you are worried about the carbon fiber barrel melting from chemicals just use a soapy degreaser the follower up with alcohol.

my local princess auto stocks 80 grit aluminum oxide. turn down the pressure and it works well. I had a hard time trying to find 100 or 120. it was about $55 for a large bag.

It is my experience with these types of products to stick with manufacturers guidelines for best results. Garnet is a very good and less expensive alternative to aluminium oxide and that is what I use. Good luck.

Chappy, you might try Manus abrasives in Coquitlam. Garnet is around 14.00 per bag.
