I was looking at my Surefire 215 last night and said to myself "geez that's like an extra 2" on the barrel!"

It's big.

So now I'm considering my old A2 and thinking that wasn't a bad size at all. And still a pretty solid muzzle device.

As I look at other brakes, comps, and flash hiders, they all seem a little long to me.

Just for curiosity's sake: what's the shortest muzzle device you've seen or owned?

Was it still effective?

I'm talking AR-15 threads here. Everyone knows your AK slant brake is tiny/useless. :D

The Battle Comp is the same length as the A2 and a fantasic break

After spending a countless amount of time researching this I concluded the exact same thing. I use an A2 or a BattleComp, they are the same dimensions. Flash suppression is similar, and the BattleComp is an excellent compensator. Basically the BattleComp was the only logical option if I wanted a length similar to the A2.

Now that Griffon M4SD brake is out, that is what to get. In Canada and about $105 + Tax. Good deal and a great brake.

Oh crap probably. Heck, I read somewhere that a break on a 7.5 will cause fouling and unburnt powder to rains all over the shooter.

IF I wanted something small for an AR that short, I'd look into one of the Dlask or AGW linear compensator. You know those little ones with the 7 holes on the front. I have one on my 11.5", I like it. Sends the shock downrange, and they are about the same size as an A2.

The AGW is the shortest linear comp I have seen... not that I have been looking for short comps ;)

I would advise against any of the "Battle Comp" style muzzle devices on anything less than a 14.5" barrel. I just finished some ranges with a Griffin Armament M4SD Flash Comp, which is very similar to the Battle Comp but has the added benefit of three small prongs for some flash reduction. On a MK18 (10.3" barrel) it is just annoying to shoot. The flash reduction is negligible. I had to swap it out for an A2. I think from now on, dedicated flash suppressors on shorty barrels. Honestly, for the price ($10 @ Wolverine) the A2 (DD) Flash Hider can't be beat!

You are probaby correct although I have yet to have an issue with my BC on a 12.5". The flash reduction seems rather similar to my A2.

Also, at the OP, what do you want your muzzle device to do? If you want a short device that purely reduces flash, the non-suppressor AAC Blackout is exceptional. It's about the size of an A2. You could also consider a YHM Phantom. There more of a budget item but solid performance.

As other members have stated, it's hard to beat the Battle Comp, in terms of keeping the gun on target, but it will definitely have more concussion on a short barrel and do a poor job of flash reduction.

If you want something similar to that surefire, the Blackout is for you.
