I have case stuck in a resizing die. The case head is broken off. How can I remove it without damaging the die? The die is a class D Redding die. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

Have any taps?

Please explain that method with more clarity for the OP, in case he doesn't understand it.

Easy outs will work as well when the outside of the die is heated up enough to expand away from the stuck case.

That press fit case, can be as strong as a weld. As often as not, a stuck case extrator will slip off the neck mouth rim.

Boil the whole thing for about half an hour and run some cold water down the center, screw in an easy out or tap and see if it will loosen up

You may have to do this a couple of times.

I've used this method and it's usually successful.

I usually pre thread the easy out or tap, which get the freezer treatement, to help cool the brass case, which will shrink from the cold, faster than steel.

Your big challenge, once you get the process sorted in your mind will be how to hold the die, while applying pressure to the tap/easyout.

I have even tapped them through the top, after removing the expander ball and stem. You need to use a brass drift for this or you will not only damage the tool but likely strip it out of the case wall.

RCBS makes a stuck case removal tool... a drill, a tap, a bolt, and a 'bushing' that allow the bolt to draw the case out as you screw it in...

OP mentioned the head is sheared of meaning this method won't work.

OP: try a tap or easy out the same size as the inside of the case: bites just slightly into the brass and then either pull it from bottom or tap it from the top. Did this a few times for new reloaders who failed to use correct case lube technique/ correct amount. Hardest part is finding the best sized tap: just thread it in thru the base of the cartridge.

Broken shell extractor for .308, providing the rest of the case that's stuck still has the neck portion attached. Hmmm, I re-read some posts and see that it's already been suggested, so maybe it will work, maybe not.

I use both the Forster and RCBS stuck case kits.

The RCBS uses a drill and tap on the bottom of the case. Then you use a bolt and washer contraption to screw the case out of the die.

The Forster uses over size bolts to get the sizing ball back out and then rods to hammer the case out.

I much prefer the Forster and will always try that kit first.

It is one thing to rip the rim off a stuck case.
It is an entirely different thing to rip the head off.
I don't understand how the OP ripped the head off.
But if there is nothing left to grab, removing the remainder of the case can be a challenge.
The trick is to do it without scratching or scoring the die.

Perhaps carefully use a lag screw that will almost fit the brass along with a socket a stack of washers to adjust for height? Die in the press down side up.Bet it will work but go slow you just want the screw to bite into the brass not through that and into the die.

You could put some molten lead in the case and after it cools, you could tap it out from the top end.

Or, I may have a tap that will give you the proper bite.

If the head is on I just take out the decaping pin and put a punch through the hole from the backside and tap it out.
If case head is gone then I remove decaping pin and heat brass with a torch until it turns greenish flame and anneals brass to make it soft. Then I just tap a very small slotted screw driver between the case and die and it easily folds the brass in and pops right out. That’s on a Lee die and not sure how others work.

Happen to me resizing 303 Brit case. Rip the head right off because of typical insipient crack on 303 Brit.

I happen to have a set of broken screw extractors. Spray WD40 between the case body and die. Screw the right size extractor into the case and just twist it slowly to spin the case. Out it came.
