Stuck Receiver Screws - M700

I'd use Guntech's suggestion, strong downward pressure with a correct fitting driver bit should get it out and using your drill press to provide the downward pressure lessens the chance of an oh sh!t moment and allows more torque to be applied to the screw. It the threads are damaged it will probably clean up with tap.

An aircraft mechanic friend of mine showed me a trick. Heat both the screw and the action up good and hot, then shoot the screw head directly with electrical contact cleaner then screw it out. This cools the screw down (shrinking it) and leaves the action hot (expanded) and works fairly well. Might be tough at such a small scale.

I spent yesterday visiting friends in Swan Hills. The penetrating oil was in the thread since Thurs.

So this morning I go out, full of optimism...

This is getting beyond frustrating! I'm heading towards the destructive phase!!

I heated the screw, then immediately hit it with Brake Kleen (don't have electrical contact stuff).

Selected the perfect drill bit; chucked it up.

Go to try to turn that little bastard out, and I couldn't believe it... twisted the head of that bit!!

The enemy...

And another destroyed driver bit...

Use a centre punch and carefully put a mark in the centre of that plug screw. Then use a small drill bit and use that punch mark as a track. Drill through that plug and then use progressively larger bits to open that hole until, without drilling into the threads on the receiver you are able to collapse that plug into itself.

This..... or, if you can get your hands on a small counterclockwise drill bit, you can use the same technique, but the screw may just start to pull out when you drill into it.....

AHA!! THE LITTLE BASTARD HAS BEEN DEFEATED!!

We had a helluva time with it. Once it finally came loose, it still didn't want to turn out. We had to use an o-ring hook, to apply pressure from underneath, while one of us turned the screw.

Yet, from a quick inspection, the threads appear to be okay.

And now the receiver has funky case-hardened look to it... which is no good... what do I do about that now !?

The 'Worldest Most Evil Screw'...

My neighbour gave me a hand, we heated it more, and finally it broke loose.

Shouldn't have used heat. :)
Try some fine steel wool (OOOO) and oil and see what does or doesn't clean up. Did you try a screw in the hole? You should probably chase the threads with a tap before tightening anything into the offending hole.

How hot did that get?

Hot enough I guess... and btw, obviously I'm not thrilled with it.

Friggin' Remington junk QC, is what I would say.

Ok, thanks for the advice.

You could heat that area red hot and it wouldn't harm the integrity of the action although that much heat wasn't needed. Oil and 0000 steel wool should help hide it.

You say 'Friggin' Remington junk QC'

Others may say 'Friggin poor smithing abilities'... don't break a tap off chasing the threads...

Haha, true, my skills are marginal.

But at the same time, the number of times I heated that screw, it should have given up long ago!

And it is Remington crap quality control!

There's no question, when you buy any rifle, you take for granted, such a simple act, as removing the screws in the receiver...

Twisting screwdriver heads, to break that thing loose, just shouldn't happen. Period.
